A young woman, who was kidnapped at gunpoint and taken to a homemade torture chamber rigged with bombs, escaped by diving out of a barbed wire-covered window while handcuffed, police say.

The 26-year-old Israeli woman, who was not named, was taken hostage at gunpoint by an acquaintance, Thomas Fischer, at her flat in Hamburg, northern Germany, on Friday night.

She was handcuffed and then taken to Mr Fischer's flat in Barmbek, a suburb of Hamburg, The Independent reported.

But two hours later, she pushed her way out of a window barricaded with barbed wire, police said.

Her hands still bound, she ran down the street to a friend's home with Mr Fischer, 30, chasing after her, Britain's Daily Mail reported.

Neighbours called the police and, when officers confronted him at his home later, he was carrying a grenade and a nine-millimetre gun, investigators said.

Before Friday, the pair had met through mutual friends and had seen each other only occasionally, German newspaper The Local reported.

But Mr Fischer had been preparing a prison for her in his living room, police believed.

Investigators, who said they were taking apart his ground-floor unit "piece by piece", found he had barricaded all the windows, The Local said.

They found stockpiles of food, handcuffs, gynaecological equipment, an inflatable sex doll, a metal helmet and a phone booth, which they said had been modified into a soundproof cell.

"It is evident the apartment was meant as a place of confinement for some time," the Mail quoted senior public prosecutor Wilhelm Mollers as saying. Police believed Mr Fischer may have practised using the gynaecological tools on the doll.

    Ad Feedback
In the building's basement, they located 113 fire extinguishers and homemade explosives made from fertiliser. Some of them were apparently rigged as booby-trapped bombs, police added.

A police spokesman told German daily Die Welt: "We do not know what is going on with the fire extinguishers or whether they are related to the crime."

A few days before Mr Fischer's arrest, neighbours saw him covering three windows at the back of his apartment with barbed wire, Die Welt reported.

One neighbour told the newspaper he said he was protecting himself from burglars, who he claimed had already broken into his house three times.

Police said Mr Fischer had not spoken to police since his arrest, The Local reported.

Mr Fischer's father, Hans, told German tabloid Bild he "cannot believe" what happened.

"My son was an honest boy; there has never been trouble with the police," he said.

There is no shortage of nutters locking people up these days. But this guy was in to some crazy stuff, "gynaecological equipment, an inflatable sex doll, a metal helmet and a phone booth".... :O

Eh, why not? I know a number of Israelis who moved to Germany, many to study. Not all Germans are Nazis. Not all Israelis are Jews.

Fair play to her for getting out in time, ****ed up. Guess a stint in the army may have helped.

I bet it was the computer games that drove him mad :P

On a serious note though, Thank God she managed to escape, that would have been an unimaginably horrific ordeal.

this is what I was thinking. I don't think people go from 'normal guy, no trouble with police' to psycho enslaving rapist in just one jump.
Scary scary sh1t. Soo glad she managed to escape!

All jokes aside, that's pretty damn scary. :(

Good on her for getting away

Someone who knew him said this apparently, would he not have thought to report him if he knew the guy was clearly mad?

A jobless gardener using the pseudonym Holger told the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper he has known Fischer for three years.
He said: ‘Thommy is a complete cold sadist. I never once saw him smile. He has no heart. This pig has plotted this crime for years.’

The man met Fischer at the Mahlzeit hostel in the Altona district, where Fischer would buy drinks for homeless people.

Holger went on: ‘He came every Monday wearing a military-style jacket. He drank a coffee and ogled the women. He never said a word about himself.

Instead he always asked me and my friends, “Where can I get a gun around here?” He asked us if we could get dentist tools from the flea market for him.
‘He was not playing with a full deck – you didn’t have to be a shrink to see that. He once brought a rabbit into the pub in a box. “Please kill it for me,” he said. “I want to eat.”
‘He didn’t have a job but said he sold old Nazi uniforms on the web for good money. He’d buy us beers but he didn’t drink. If a woman joined us he froze. He had never had sex, he told us that.
‘A lot of us are mad, but we are not sick in the head like him. I think Thommy will be quite happy in jail – safe in his own little world.’

what could the police do though? You can't arrest someone just because they say sme dodgy things. There's a big difference between 'knowing' (in an intuition/common sense way) that somebody's kind of dangerous and knowing they are because there's proof. Nothin they can do before the crime

Oh I know that, wasn't the crossbow cannibal or whatever he was called reported loads of times and they couldn't do anything.

It's just I presumed he didn't report him because he probably would have said something and you never know, maybe the police could have been looking for someone for a lesser crime which he might have fit the profile for.

People like that should always be reported to the police so that they have it on record, it could save valuable time in the event of a missing person.

I'm rather uncomfortable with the fact that the place in which she was kept was referred to as a 'torture chamber'. Seems like a cheap dig at the backgrounds of the individuals...

What else would you call it? It's clearly a torture chamber

Torture chamber / gas chamber -- out of all the ways they could have described it, I just think it was poor choice of words

maybe. What would you call it - torture cell? Still think you're missing the real issue here

When they said torture chamber, they actually meant torture peninsula.

I recognise the major issue here (and it has been reiterated many times already), I just feel that there are many other things they could have called it

What do you mean "out of all the ways they could have described it, it's clearly a torture chamber, you can't call it something else just because he's German, that's just political correctness gone too far, changing the name from chamber (which it is always called) would be ridiculous.

It's not as if they called it a concentration camp.

Why did he need the metal helmet...?

I mean I get the rest of the stuff might have some purpose... but the metal helmet...?

This is truely the worst thing a German has ever done.

They used metal torture helmets on victims during the Inquisitions.

I also think some of the inquisitors might have worn metal helmets (but I could be wrong about that)

What I can't understand is how the woman escaped through a barbed wire barricaded window!
This will work great for the defence.. "Your Honour, my client is not of sound mind. He is obviously incapable of completing tasks for which he is enthused, how can we expect him to be capable of adjusting himself to society's norms??"

As someone said earlier she probably had been in the Israeli army because Israel conscripts women.

Hmm. You'd think he'd have taken precautions to restrict her movement, seems like he done quite a bit of planning. If only all nut-jobs were so incompetent.
