Couple of questions

Accepted an offer (TA201) on Monday so I've been looking around the website and a few things stuck out to me. I'm hoping someone can help me out a little.

September 5th as the day of registration. That seems awfully early. I know people in other colleges who arent back until the end of September. Is it always that early?

Do you generally do much the frist few weeks? I was working off the assumption that it would be the end of September so I didnt take into account my already booked holidays. I'll be there for the first week, but missing the next two. Will that affect me much?

On the calender it has "Grade Book closes". What does that mean?

Study period's I assume are days in which you dont have classes and are instead used for your own study?

I think that's all. If not, I'll be back with more questions soon. The second one is my priority. The rest I can figure out as I go along if needs be.

Thanks for anyone who takes the time to reply.

Yep, always around that date. Classes actually begin the second week of September which this year is the 12th. So you'll go in on the 5th for your registration and induction day and won't be in classes until the 12th when everyone else starts. After the 1st year, your registration is just a form in the post and you sent it back to the college and just go back in on the date stated in the letter you get with your forms. So next year onwards you won't have to have an induction day. Have a look at this link. http://www.it-tallaght.ie/media/Media,23011,en.pdf Says all about the induction day and such.

To be honest, you could actually miss a good bit... The first week is generally OK when it comes to work. Mostly just a introduction but after that its straight into the work which needs to be done that semester. It might be worth making friends asap so you can borrow and they can take sets of notes for you. (Although some lecturers don't give out notes for people who aren't present in the class)

I still don't have a clue what grade book is... So I can't help you there, maybe someone else can give us both an insight to that one.

That is correct, yes. You don't have to go into the college. You may stay at home and study. Sometimes your lecturer could arrange a revision class for you though in those days which means you could have to go in. I'm pretty sure the college does be open normal hours so if you find studying hard at home, you can always head in and find yourself a room or go to the library.

Any other questions I'd happy to help you out with, if I can.

You'll be in on the 5th and then another day that week to set up your moodle and college email.

Regarding missing the two weeks, I'd suss out the lecturers and see if they use Moodle in the first week. Or well just try making mates with people who take notes.:D

Grade Book Closes could be dates projects are due would be my guess.

Study periods in Tallaght? Never heard of them, I know DIT and a few other colleges do "Reading Weeks" Tallaght don't mind you.

Grade Book is the system for uploading CA and exam results for lecturers. Its the date by which they need to have all their homework done for !

So it has no bearing on students?

Sucks about missing stuff so early but I am an electrician so have done some of it and fairly recently. Hopefully I wont miss too much new stuff.

New Question, Book Lists. Do we get them in class or at registration or what?

You don't need books for Computing, lecturers will advise you on a few books but they'll be in the Library. The lecturers will probably have them on moodle for you to get the name.
