In dire need of advice...

    Hey guys,

Up until recently I have had my heart set on pursuing a career in Medicine. I did my Leaving Cert in 2010 and got 530. Anyway, I took a course I didnt want because I was offered a scholarship but I dont want to return to that because my heart is not in it.

Recently the idea of studying Arts in UCC was put before me. Teaching was always an interest of mine and I would probably teach English and possibly German/Music.

Does anyone have any advice (whether your studying Arts in UCC atm or not). I'm just lost at the minute so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im going into 3rd year arts in UCC in September! I myself was in a similar situation to you...I guess I still am really as Im not sure if my heart is fully in what I'm doing.

I am doing a joint honours in English and Irish. Having just finished 2nd year I have more than a fair idea of the ends and outs of the course. I did Arts solely with the view to teach so I have to keep reminding myself that as the course itself doesnt have any connection to teaching as such.

I intend on doing a Hdip in Education next year which will be focused on teaching!

If you choose to do English, be prepared for alot of reading!!!!!!! A love of English is really needed to enjoy this at a college level as its alot more intense than school, especially in 2nd year. I find that I drop behind in the amount of reading we have to do (purely my own laziness of course!)....but I'm sure If like reading this shouldn't be a problem!

Personally, I can't wait to get 3rd year finished so I can do the Dip and focus on teaching as there is no mention of teaching in the course itself!

Hope this is of use to you!

A serious consideration for anyone considering a teaching career in Ireland is that jobs are scarcer than hen's teeth now and will be for the foreseeable future.
