You cant expect him to give you a refund and you to still hold on to the box..

I've never heard of it being illegal to ship electronics to China. I've had to do it myself a number of times.

what you might be thinking of is that it is illegal to send some electronic and computer items from the USA to china.

I had a simple pushbutton switch seized by Chinese customs, sent from my company to our office in China.

A simple one like this, no light or electronics,

They had told me to send DHL, and we get all stuff via DHL from them. I just sent it normal post as a test.

I think it would be cheaper to use couriers for a large item anyway, and they should be able to answer your question too.

Dealextreme is one shop who actually do let you keep stuff, you usually have to send a photo of the faulty item. Not sure about bigger items with them, in the OPs case the sender can probably get a refund.

Some might send a spare part to fix it, if you knew what exactly was wrong, like a faulty tuner -speaking of which many satellite boxes have plug in tuners and other plug in cards. These might have come loose in transit. If it was me I would open it up and have a look, though it might break tamper seals, you could email and ask if you can do it and let him take responsibility.
