I'm pretty sure that my htc desire does not have the functionality to stream music to an output device over usb... has anyone tried this to e.g. stereo systems with usb in?
I'd be interested in upgrading to phone which had this ability.
Haven't had much success streaming over bluetooth either:confused:

oddly enough, the stereo system doesn't have a headphone jack input, only an out... just a usb in.

Wow, I'd no idea analogue to digital would be that easy... seems to be it though!!

Not going to work for you at all.
That's just a sync cable for an ipod nano.
You won't get anything into the USB port of your stereo with it from a headphone socket.

Plug the Desire into the stereo using your normal USB sync cable.
If you have it set up as USB storage, the stereo should pick it up.
The USB port is probably meant to be used just for usb sticks with music files on them.

Seemed a bit too easy alright... but I think that there are more expensive, bulkier converters out there that might do the same job.

The desire does not support audio out over the usb, or so I've read elsewhere, I get that if there were music stored locally on the memory card or disk, the above might work as it would only be reading data in over the usb.
But I am using a third party app that streams content from the web, I'm looking to have the ability to play this through the stereo (without 3.5mm jack input option)

I'm going to update the phone soon anyway, so does anyone know of an andriod mobile that does support audio streaming over USB?

You can buy a USB soundcard for a few quid which gives you the stereo out to USB in,
but this is still not going to get you anywhere.
I've never seen a USB port on a stereo that is expecting to have anything attached to it besides storage devices.

What model stereo is it? Does it have any other inputs (optical perhaps).

There are setups you can use with an Airport Express you can leave permantly wired up to the stereo and use it as an optional audio destination. This was originally Apple only, but recently has become a little more widely available.
