Transferring from iPhone 4 to iPhone 1: SIM card not supported?

Ok - this is the latest in a series of never-ending iPhone problems I've had recently.

My iPhone 4 is currently away being looked at by Apple. In the interim, I had hoped to transfer my SIM card (via a micro sim adapter) to my old iphone 1, to sync everything across fro iTunes, and bobs your uncle.

So last night, I did a hard reset of the old iphone - wiping it of everything (this took about an hour). Then I put in the SIM card, and hooked it up to the itunes - but when I clicked on it, it came up that "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported"

Does anyone know the problem? How can my SIM card be ok for itunes when it's in my iphone 4, but not when it's in my iphone 1 ?

I think I may have had the iphone 1 jailbroken/unlocked at some point with a view to selling it, but then just didn't bother parting with it. Could this be something to do with the problem?

Sounds like it is sim locked. I presume you restored it last night which would have removed the jailbreak and the unlock

I did the hard restore (wiped everything, waited for the phone to restart which took an hour) then plugged in the iphone to itunes to reboot everything, but then that error message showed up

What network was the iphone1 bought on?

O2 ....... and my current SIM card is Vodafone.....

Is the iphone1 somehow rigged to accept O2 simcards only?

did o2 even sell the first iphone, i thought they only started with the 3G

obviously it wont work with a voda sim if you just restored, you have to jailbreak again and then install ultrasn0w to unlock it or maybe blacksn0w

If the iPhone was bought from O2 Ireland it will be lock to accept only an O2 ireland sim card unless you requested it to be factory unlocked. Your going to need to jailbreak it and software unlock it for it to work on Vodafone.

Ok, but I already got it unlocked etc (by GSM solutions on jervis street)

Does the fact that I did a hard reset of the thing mean that its locked again?

If by hard reset you mean restore in iTunes, then yes.

I just wiped my phone via the option in "Settings/General/Restore to factory"

Then I conntected to iTunes, and this problem arose

o2 didn't actually sell the first iphone(with the metal back) as far as i can remember!

GSM solutions, in order to unlock your phone, Jailbroke it, and used a cydia tweak to unlock it. they probably charged you a princely fee for this also, when in fact you could have done it yourself for free.

the only people that can officially unlock your iphone, are o2!

When you erased all content and settings from your iphone 1, it also removed the jailbreak and the unlock.

And yes they did. They had exclusive rights to iphones in Ireland when they first arrived on the market

I always have to laugh when someone upgrades or restores an iPhone and then blames the phone because their software unlock or jailbreak is gone

The jailbreak on the 1st gen iPhone unlocks the Phone also it's simple to do.
