Bord Gáis: 22% price increase on the way - and staff creaming it!

Just fifteen minutes ago Fergal Keane on RTÉ 1's Drivetime (started after the 17:00 news) reported on the goings-on of the employees of Bord Gáis. Apparently, hundreds of them are getting "disturbance money" for moving from, for instance, Foley Street in Dublin to a place 15 minutes walk away. Less than 10 years ago staff were also given "disturbance money" and these employees of a semi-state company have received, and are receiving, extraordinary bonuses in the context of cutbacks in the public sector. People are texting in in abject disgust at the way Bord Gáis's management appears to be giving into every trade union demand - and we, Bord Gáis customers, will be paying for it. There was much, much more to the "perks" they appear to be getting there. The vast, vast majority of them seem totally indefensible.

This is before, as the Drivetime presenter Philip Boucher Hayes notes, the impending Bord Gáis increase of 22% is announced.

If you are a Bord Gáis customer, or just want to be incensed at the perks these semi-state workers are receiving amid all the talk of cutbacks in the public and private sectors, it's well worth listening to the entire extract on the Drivetime website.

What would you expect from a semi-state body?

They weren't named, and Bord Gáis refused to say how much money this is costing. But here's the Bord Gáis management:

    Bord Gáis management

John Mullins is the CEO, Denis Cronin is the 'Group Director Strategic Human Resources' and Margaret Lane is Head of Human Resources.

If any of those annoyed out there are Bord Gais customers simply switch. When you are asked why you are switching just tell them. They might get the message. I switched to BG during the big switch but recently went back to ESB simply because it was cheaper.

I would have thought the Bord Gáis management would have some semblance of sensitivity to the economic reality, particularly when they are making such unprecedented increases in the prices they are charging customers for using their monopoly gas service. Ultimately if this proceeds it will be Pat Rabbitte, the Minister for the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources who will be responsible.

Possibly, if this were 1905. Keane was saying that based on existing remuneration and previous packages all the indications are that the package will be substantial.

will definitely be returning to ESB if this is what Bord Gais is doing!

Look at the big thick heads on them. 22% is a ridiculous increase - it's unnatural...

Why do semi state bodies with their primary Market in Ireland need to make so much profit? It's essentially the government making a profit from its own people.

These people are the real elites in this country, a job for life, great salaries and the unions control the workplace to make it as cushy as possible.

Cheers for the link to management, email being written right now. We all should bombard them with complaints and let them know we are sick of taking it up the ass .

If this goes ahead they may as well send a tube of KY jelly out to us all too.

....and all the while selling an essential commodity from inside what basically amounts to a cartel.
That lot were loving the germans turning off their reactors, so they could push up prices here and then come on the radio saying that regretfully due to supply problems and large demand on the continent all such price rises are beyond their control.

It's not a monopoly. There are 2 companies we own screwing us, with a fake "green" company doing the same.

Hang on a second, isn't there supposed to be laws against that? I think it's called a cartell. But since ESB where forced to raise their prices from one of the lowest in the EU to amongst the highest in the EU to encourage others to enter our energy market I know what's going to happen.

Sure aren't our glorious rulers doing the same, so why wouldn't the semis follow the leader.

Not much point switching, ESB Staff are not exactly on the bread line either, I wonder what perks they get?. Semi-state employees need to be put on the same terms as other state employees, i.e salary cuts, and the awful, inappropriately named, and crippling pension levy for public servants. :D
p.s Some Public Servants without full service (especially pre 95 ones) are paying dearly for AVC,s and have to pay BOTH pension levies , the public service one and the .6% of fund value for their AVC, this is robbery.

Even if all bord gais staff weren't paid, judging by the amount of gas used and the fact that we import almost all of it, it wouldn't have any impact on the gas price. Or maybe every customer would save a few cent per year.

The 22% increase is because the cost of gas is up internationally, and has been sanctioned by the regulator, so it is clearly necessary.

if we get snow like last year, can you imagine the gas bill. My bill was over €500 now add 22%

This Bord Gáis story is covered today here: Workers seek pay for 3km move

HUNDREDS of Bord Gais workers are seeking payment for an imminent move to new offices less then 3km away.

They have made a claim for disturbance money to compensate them for the change.

Bord Gais services in Dublin are being consolidated due to a rise in staff numbers.

The current headquarters in Foley Street, Dublin 1, have become too small and the offices are being moved to Warrington Place.

Larry Donald, from Bord Gais, told the Irish Independent that the claim would not affect the change of location.

Unions have made a claim for compensation for additional travel time. The talks are ongoing.

Ten years ago staff members got between €2,000 to €8,000 per person for disturbance money from the Labour Court for similar moves.

:). No, 'creaming it' as in the expression "he looks like the cat that got the cream"; somebody who gets the best part (cream) of something. As in the following stories:

University chiefs are creaming it off while students fear fee hikes

    Creaming it

Farmers say 'we're not creaming it'

Fat cats creaming it in tax havens

And then we have the same meaning encapsulated by the phrase ''cream of the crop'.

BORD GAIS has this morning taken delivery of well over 100 deluxe office chairs, each costing almost a thousand euro – just four weeks after being granted permission to raise gas prices by 22 per cent.

I think these Union bosses should be hired by the Guards to talk people down from tall buildings, or help the American government with terrorists.

They are the masters of negotiation.
