Possible renaming of Phoenix Park Station

Following customer feedback, we are considering the possibility of renaming Phoenix Park Station.

While the station was originally named Phoenix Park as it was built to facilitate the residential development on the old Phoenix Park racecourse site, we have had feedback that the name may cause some confusion for those visiting the public amenity that is Phoenix Park, which is not convenient to the station.

We want to hear what our customers think - do you have a suggestion for a new name for the station or do you think we should keep the Phoenix Park name?

Let us know via twitter @irishrail or by following us on Facebook and commenting there.

Please note our policy is to name stations by reference to the geographic area the station serves, and not after individuals or groups.

Phoenix Park Station opened in January 2008 on the Maynooth-Dublin commuter line, between Castleknock and Ashtown Stations. It is served by 40 trains in each direction to and from the city. There is a 100-space park and ride facility at the station also.

Keep the suggestions clean and reasonable :pac:

If you wanted to go do the patriot/rebel line Field Marsh John French was ambushed by Ashtown Castle by the IRA

So select a leader from there, Dan Breen as an example.
Not something I'd vote for but seems very obvious so maybe the organizers have thought of it

Edit, no names allowed, should have read it fully :o

Err, you mean apart from Connolly, Heuston, Pearse, Kent (or is it Ceannt) and the others ?

I think it is monumentally insane to give a station a geographical name like Phoenix Park when it doesn't actually serve the Phoenix Park. What were they thinking ? Let's confuse the tourists, maybe ?

I strongly suspect that was the government of the day.

Yeah, I'm sure it was, but this doesn't change the fact that they have many stations named after individuals, despite their policy.

I guess they mean they don't name new stations or rename existing stations after individuals.

I suppose if they have changed their policy & are now sticking to location, it could possibly be narrowed down to Auburn or Dunsink, & if they are still mixing in odd bits of Spanish they could use San Auburn or San Dunsink (à la Ospidéal San Séamus)

    Or maybe Urndun or Aubsink...

The problem with that station is, its not really near anything, other than those apartments on the Racecourse and Russell Park GAA. Which is reflected in that hardly anyone uses it. Russell Park is really the only non confusing thing you could call it.

Their policy on names is ridiculous.

    Just add this in front:

The not even remotely close to

Better option is just to shut it down. Never see more than 5 cars parked there and it is not exactly walking distance from the Phoenix Park apartments.

Why it not walking distance? Its just down the road no?

Its built now, and unmanned (I assume). Hardly see anyone at it, but it can't cost that much to run.

How about doing something like this then, and turn the station and surrounds into a tourist attraction, just like the station in Wales.

    Here goes -

THE STATION ON THE NAVAN ROAD NEAR TO THE ROYAL CANAL AND THE PHOENIX PARK :D

Tbh, i never took the walk as i have no business there. I only drive past that station 2x a day.
But if i would live in the Phoenix park racecourse apartments it would for sure not appeal to me to have to walk to that station every single day.
Must be at least a 15 minute walk, climbing up that bridge.
I would be just too lazy for that.
Positioning could have been much better imo.

The station was built by the developer of the apartments and was to serve the whole development when it was finished.

They could just call it "Navan Road" but then again that might bring the tourist confusion to a whole a new level...

THE STATION ON THE NAVAN ROAD NEAR TO THE ROYAL CANAL AND THE PHOENIX PARK :D
Surely "THE STATION ON THE NAVAN ROAD NEAR TO THE ROYAL CANAL AND NOT NEAR THE PHOENIX PARK"

In the Irish language, "Naomh" tends to be used for Irish saints and "San" for other saints.

Ok, then how about this Vic ?

"THE STATION ON THE NAVAN ROAD NEAR TO THE ROYAL CANAL AND NOT NEAR THE PHOENIX PARK BUT NEAR THE PHOENIX PARK RACECOURSE - INSTEAD A BIX" ;):D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

    You need to add...

"....NEAR PHOENIX PARK RACECOURSE WHICH ISN'T A RACE COURSE"

Basically its not near anything. Maybe they should build some vistor attraction near it.

Ah but Victor, it isn't that far away from the park. I suggest we call it something like

Phoenix Park-Not close to anywhere useful in the Park as such

    How about

"Phoenix Park, but get off at ASHTOWN because is closer to the Park and anything useful TBH. "

It's no wonder IE have requested help on this one - although not near it, but not too far way in the Park you have Ashtown Castle and visitor centre which is worth a visit IMO - admission free. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Yes but its shorter to get to them from Ashtown.

TBH anyone that would walk from those apartments to the Phoenix Park station, would walk to Ashtown, its not much further away. Anyone who thinks it is, wouldn't walk to the Phoenix Park station either. Which is demonstrated by the low numbers using it. Besides you could almost cycle to most places in city center quicker than walking to the station. Anyone who can walk has probably figured that out too.

    How about we mothball it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Maybe they should publish the cost of running it vs the income generated by it and the numbers using it. Not that rail transport is justified solely on income, but it would be interesting to know. How much time would it cut off the schedule.

1.5 minutes - 30 seconds each acceleration, deceleration and station stop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

    Feels longer than that tbh.

just call it the Celtic Tiger station and be done with it :)
