Was thinking of bringing new car in from UK next year.
Do I pay VAT in UK and then pay again in Ireland before reclaiming or do I pay the difference?
Also would the VAT be based on what I paid in UK for the car or on what revenue here think open market price is?
    Any help or info appreciated.

You shouldnt pay vat in the UK. VAt form 411 I think in the uk. The dealers often insist that you pay them vat and say it can be claimed back when you pay in ireland. You could do this but its not the right way and it would mean that you have to come up with extra funds in the short term.
I think you pay irish VAT (at irish VAT rate) on the pre VAT invoice price you paid in the uk. You will have to present this invoice when paying here and then VRT based on OMSP here and emissions category of car

Calculate the pre-tax prices of the cars before deciding. You could well find that an Irish car would work out cheaper. Pre-tax, Ireland has traditionally had some of the lowest. If you are starting off with a higher pre-tax price it will work out more expensive.

I don't know how the 2008 VRT changes have changed things as it was a couple of years before then that I did research into it.

The car I am thinking of is a Seat Alhambra se lux 170 that is not available here. Irish spec cars are v poor in comparison and seem very expensive(though not as bad as VW sharan which is completely overpriced).

Talk to Isaac Agnews in Belfast. They will sell the car ex vat and have exported plenty of cars to Ireland for private purchasers.

Taking into account that Ireland has low pre-tax prices for cars, i would try to pick up a demo model and just pay the vrt.
