Legal issues when installing own WIFI solution

    Hi,

Hoping somebody may be able to assist.

An IT consultant can provide a WIFI service for a hospitality service, essentially it's a system that runs alongside the current broadband provider which for cost reasons isn't an option for the whole premises.

Although the equipment works, have been told that if somebody using the premises were to view or download illegal images for example via the WIFI, that the IT consultant could be implicated as providing a means for them to access it.

Does anybody know if this is true? It forms part of a wider job but if there are implications obviously best not to proceed with this element. Rang ComReg for advice but they said it may be a legal issue and couldn't advise.

    Thanks
    D.

Every ISP provides the means to view and download illegal images.

Every cafe/bar providing a wifi hotspot provides the same means.

Every manufacturer and retailer of carving knives provides the means to murder people.

You could apply a little logic or pay a lawyer a large fee.

Im sure the IT consultant would be providing the service from another ISP,
therefore the regulations that apply to ISP's would not apply to him/her.
Worst case he/she may be required to assist in and investigation should it used for illegal purposes.
