Long putter

His [Keegan bradley] victory came with the assistance of a long putter, which is quite within the rules of the game but I'd like to see them banned.

I don't think anything that's anchored should be part of the sport and I don't like them at all. If you anchor the butt to your body, it guarantees the arc of the putter down below and it's easier to repeat a consistent pendulum swing when one end of the club doesn't move.

Keegan Bradley won a major championship with one and now Simpson has won as well. Remember, these aren't older guys with frayed nerves; these are young men at the peak of their fitness.

I noticed Stuart Appleby was using one last week and I suspect we're going to see even more players trying them out. Sadly I think the R&A and the USGA have been too slow to respond and prevent its use.

Manufacturers have produced some wonderful golf clubs and it's helped to make the sport more accessible and enjoyable for amateurs. But the guys at the top of the game shouldns't get as much assistance.

Much like 64 degree wedges, I think long putters should be banned. However, I think that horse has bolted and I'm afraid the sport could now be stuck with them.

Above is an article by Rob Lee about the long putter. I think its too late to ban them and TBH I'm not sure they should be banned anyway. What do ye think?

Never too late to ban them. I think they should be banned.

Well they were able to ban square grooved clubs after they had been widely used so it's not too late.

I agree with Rob Lee's analysis though that you should not be allowed anchor anything against the body!

Difficult question to answer. I do think that the longer putters make good stoke mechanics easier. However, they don't do anything for you in terms of green reading and arguably they don't really help you with speed / distance control. Putting is still going to be very difficult whether you use the long putter or not.

I think once we start seeing the majority of tourament winners using the long stick, the R&A will have to consider a ban.

i'm not a fan of them either to be honest. You are using your body as a swing aid

For the argument: if they brought out a driver that you could do the same i.e. anchor to part of your body to help with consistency of your swing, it be banned straight away.

I'm on the fence. I've only ever seen the pros use them so they don't really affect me.

I do think that Rob Lee should be banned though.

If they helped that much every pro would be using them.

It's just that they don't need to use them as their putting strokes are good. Lets say tiger got a wobbly hand in the morning ...

I think the should be banned anyway as it takes a lot of the skill out of the stroke.

It would be like Roger Federer's form starting to slip so they allow him use an extra big tennis racket or something .. :pac::pac::pac:
