Argentina or Colombia?

I'm planning a 4-week trip over Christmas, and two countries I'm considering are Argentina and Colombia. I've never been to either.

Argentina: great history, Buenos Aires, tango, great steaks, great football.

Colombia: newly emerging, so exciting and not overly touristy. A friend highly recommended it. Otherwise don't know too much about it.

I'll be traveling independently and using hostels so for me cost is not really an issue. Flights appear to be around the same price.

Anyone got reasons to select one over the other?

It'll be winter in Colombia, northern hemisphere, summer in Argentina, southern hemisphere.

Parts of Colombia will be chilly during the day, Bogota etc, ie need a jacket sort of cool, not snow.
The north coast along the Caribbean should be nice.
Down south in Cali will be warm.

Argentina on the other hand will be warm and summery, all except the far south, down nearest Antarctica.

I've been to both and would like to go back to both, maybe Argentina though would draw me back first. I liked the ease of travel, you have this in both countries, they expect backpackers and so there is a wide variety of hotels and hostels you can use, even in Colombia.

Colombia has been getting backpackers for years, even during the height of their FARC and other trouble they got something crazy like 5 times the number of travellers compared to next door Venezuela.

Some parts of Colombia might have what they call hotels which is really a hostel in which you have a private room. The price will be the same as a hostel bed anywhere else. There are also good choice of all range of hotels in both countries.

Wifi usually comes as part of the package in any hostel you stay in. Breakfast, probably more in Arg, usually comes with the price of a bed.

I can recommend a great hostel in the heart of Buenos Aires if you're interested.

Argentina for wine and beef; Colombia for coffee.

    Enjoy which ever you chose.

Thanks Imme. Nice little summary there. Doesn't make my choice much easier though:)

Colombia is actually on the equator so the Winter/Summer things isn't as relevant as people are saying.

High altitude places are liable to coolness at the best of times, but low lying places on the equator will be always warm, even in winter.
