    Vista x64

I'm having problems with a piece of software (Metastock) and the support people have asked me to look for two files on my machine - astsrv.exe and services.msc

Using Start/Serch/Search Everything I can't find either of them.

Should I be able to? i.e should they be there by default?

    Thanks.

    D.

    Start/Run

    Type services.msc

Another thing to try is hold Windows Key (One between alt + ctrl with the windows flag) and press R, this brings up the run box where you can type those commands, it could be something to do with the windows search indexing not working.
If thats still not working it could be an issue with your enviornment variables or something, try going the long winded way into services>Start>control Panel>[classic view/view by: large icons]>Administritive tools. In there should be a link to the services manager

    Thanks guys.

astsrv.exe is nowhere to be found.

In Services, AST Service has two blank columns (Description and Status) and under Startup Type it says Automatic and under Log On As it says Local System.

The support guy for the software said I should find astsrv.exe in two locations.

    Hhhhmmmmm.........

Maybe the AST Service wasnt installed right? astsrv.exe is the metastock program (according to google) and services.msc is a windows management console. Try reinstalling metastock, run as administrator and all that

If it is Automatic (astsrvc) and yet not running (empty status column) it may be disabled from startup in msconfig.exe. If it should be running you can start it by right click and start.

Thanks for the extremely(!! :)) prompt replies.

I tried the right-click solution before and I get: "Windows could not start the AST Service service on your computer. Error 1717: The interface is unknown."

    Any ideas about this one?

Or, if I need to re-install....

    1. Should I remove the program first?

    2. How do I install with Admin privileges?

    Very grateful.

    Thanks.

If you put the cd (or whatever the media the program runs off) go into my computer, right click the media and explore it, locate the setup.exe and right click it>run as administrator. Does the program definitely support 64bit windows?
sounds to me like a service was registered that does not exist, or something to that nature, but you say you can't find that .exe so it could be just a case of the installer being unable to load the application properly. I would run the uninstall before doing this, no harm in doing so

    Nick,

    Thanks again for the reply.

    Here's what I did.

    1. Uninstalled Metastock - including removing one item manually that wasn't removed by the uninstaller.

    2. Put CD in CD drive and right clicked on setup to Run as Admin.

    3. Installation started. Then, about half way through, it said "There is no disc. Please put disc in drive H." Drive H is my DVD drive! I never had this problem when using the Autorun with the disc in the CD drive. It installed, but it wouldn't open afterwards.

Anyway, I removed the disc, put it in the DVD drive and started again - i.e. choosing Run as Administrator.

Same problem. When I try to open the program, I get "Unable to install Windows service"

This program is a x64 bit verion.

    So, very puzzled.......

Could I extract the missing astsrv.exe from the CD (or DVD!!) and manually put it whereever it should go?

Does the service have any dependencies that are not running?

    Services.msc
    Right click the service
    properties
    select dependencies tab
Check that any services listed there are started

After this I'm all out :(

It could be a disc/drive problem, try copying all the files from the dvd into a folder on your desktop, if that doesn't work your dvd drive could be broken. Call the folder metastock dvd or whatever, copy all files and folders and run setup from desktop, if that fails to work I've no idea...

    A few things........

    1. Right click on Services and there is no Dependencies tab. Is it called something else on Vista x64? Only, General, Shortcut, Security, Details, Previous Versions.

    2. I found this thread...........

    http://forum.equis.com/forums/thread/31105.aspx

Note the second post from Justin.

I found the astsrv.exe file on the CD and copied and pasted it into both System32 and SysWOW64. Oddly, when I was pasting it into SysWOW64 I got a message saying that it already existed blah, blah, so I chose the Keep both versions option.

But, why the hell didn't the Search find it earlier??? Even now, if I do a search, it only finds it in System32, not SysWOW64 (which is the only place it was earlier, as I've just said)

Anyway, after all that, I still can't start the program and I still can't start AST manually in Services - error 1717 etc....

    Infuriating!

Doubt that as I regurarly use both for both burning and installing.

    See my post above.

    Many thanks!

Locate the file in SysWOW64 again. Delete the one called 'astsrv.exe' and then rename the 'astsrv (2).exe' to 'astsrv.exe'. Then try starting it again. Probably won't work but worth a try :)

    No joy, I'm afraid.

In Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services, when I right click on AST Service and try to Start it manually, I get the following error message:

“Windows could not start the AST Services service on Local Computer. Error 1717: The interface is unknown.”

I suspect this is the key to the problem.

    Thanks.

Update in case anyone else ever has a problem with Event Log and AST Service not starting.

    Here's the solution.

    1. Reboot as Administrator.

    2. Delete c:\windows\Logs

    3. Delete c:\windows\System32\LogFiles

(Note: If, when trying to delete either of the above folders, the error message “You do not have permission to perform this action.” appears, simply do the following: Open the folder and delete the files and subfolders one at a time. When the folder is empty, it too can be deleted.)

    Reboot.

You will now find that in Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services/AST Service is listed as Started.
