Please bare with me as I am not tech savvy at all, so I might sound a bit stupid with my questions but at least I hope some of you can help!

I found an Iphone last week while hiking, it is slightly damaged but seems to still work. I left it on because I thought the owner would try to ring it, but the battery ran out. I will try to borrow a charger to leave it on again. My question is; as I was surprise the person didn't try to ring as soon as they realised it was lost I wondered if they would be able to, since the thing is locked with some passcode, and if its like my phone its never really on until the passcode is put in??? If thats the case, anything I can do to turn the phone on? And is there a way to find out the number and/or owner's info in the phone or elsewhere?
Any point in bringning it to Garda station, or will it just be left there unattended to?

Just feeling sorry for the person who lost it and having a bit too much time on my hands trying to solve this it seems!

Does it say what network it is in the top bar? You could bring it into one of the network shops?

Alternativley the SIM card is located in a drawer on the top of the phone (3g / 3gs at least) if you pop that out with a pin you will see which network is on.

They should be able to contact the owner.

The passcode won't stop them from ringing the phone. But when you turn it back on the SIM might be locked as well. You'll be able to see whether it is connected to the network in the top left corner.

As fionny said though, contacting the network is probably the best way to get it back to them.
