With the Cork County Board not taking Denis Walsh back as senior hurling manager, most people are tipping JBM to take over for a 3 year term. Do people think he's the right man to rebuild Cork hurling?

JBM will at least need 3 years if he is to turn things around. cork u21 looked good against limerick in the munster final, but the problem for cork is that they havent' done well at underage level recently so he will need to address that if cork are to return to where they were. JBM has done this before when he came in 1996 , when cork were in a similar position to where they are now. imo it will take longer than 3 yrs to get cork into a position where they realistically can challenge for an AI

I wouldn't be too down hearted about our lack of underage success over the last few years. While it is of course important to be winning at underage, I think it's more important to be competing well and playing to the same level as those counties that went on to eventually win all Ireland. Underage campaign can be all or nothing and even the best of underage teams can be caught cold and bow out of the championship after 1 match. This years Under 21 team played super stuff against both Tipp and Limerick and should have won the Munster and would have if it wasn't for the unanswered 2-3/4 that Limerick got in the second half. I have no doubt that this group of underage plays are as good as any in the country. Cork have been dam unlucky in the last few years. In 2007, we had Galway beaten on the semi final only to lose in extra time following a dubious free in the last seconds of normal time. Last year we had extra time heartache again after matching Tipperary stride for stride, a Tipperary side that blitz Galway in the final. Who ever the new manager is, he needs to give talented hurlers such as Lehane, Coughlan, Walsh, Cahalane, Drake etc their chance to show everyone what they can do on the hurling pitch

I think you are spot on there, Cork seem to be stagnant at best when it comes to senior and haven't challenged at underage AI level for a while. Dublin have huge numbers coming through at underage and seem to be developing them into a robust and competitive team, same goes for Limerick to a certain extent. Added into that Tipp, KK and maybe Waterford and it is a long road back for Cork - I'm not saying that they can't do it, but it will be difficult.

The apparent/immenent appointment of JBM won't change the fact that the raw material for AI success isn't there at the moment. Like it or not Cork will have to put up with a few lean years and should let JBM (if he gets the job) deal with team development himself - there is no point spouting about winning or challenging for AI's when you would be at best 5th or 6th best in the country. We in Galway know all about this, unfortunalty.

JBM wont be able to bring instant success. Even in his 1st stint as manager he was hammered into the middle of next week by Limerick in 1996. The following year he introduced some new blood (seanie mcgrath, sully, joe deane, sean og) and they were competitive v clare. In 1998 they won the league with more new players but still werent ready when they met clare in the championship. Then it all came together in 1999. He had the above mentioned fellas in their 3rd year as seniors and added in therest of the 97/98 U21 team. It goes to show that if you give a manager time to build his team without demanding instant success, good things can happen. The most imperitives for Cork next year are good minor and u21 campaigns, the introduction of a new team in the league and a competitive showing in the championship and somehow persuading Aidan Walsh to play senior hurling! JBM is the only man for the job for the following reasons:
    • nobody in cork has a bad word to say about him (now theres a rarity!!!!),
    • he s an inspiration for all young players
    • he goes to every county championship match and knows what talent is there.
    • none of the older players could complain about him because nobody would back them
    • he would be given time to build a team without the public losing the head if there was the odd bad result
JBM your county needs you again

    He's back!
The Appointment Committee has decided to recommend the appointment of Jimmy Barry Murphy as County Senior Hurling Manager.

The appointment is subject to ratification by the County Committee at its next meeting on September 6th.

By decision of the County Committee at its last meeting, a new Manager will have a three year term and has the right, subject to ratification, to appoint his own Selectors and 'Backroom Team'.

The Management Committee (of the County Committee) has authorised this announcement now to enable the recommended Manager to commence the process of appointing his Management Team, and to provide the earliest opportunities for Management Appointments to be considered for the other Cork Inter County Hurling Teams in the various Grades.
