Skipping Gears

    Guys,

    I need some help:

WhenI collected my bike 2months ago the wheels had to be removed to fit it in the car, when I started using the bike the gears would click/skip every so often, but this dissapeared.

I had to remove the wheels again over the w/e and now have terrible skipping of gears altogether:mad::mad::mad:! I put the bik on the smallest sprocket front and back and removed the wheel, and at the other end, just slipped the wheel back in, back on the smallest sprocket.

the skipping is so bad that I'm afraid to stand on the pedals, my spin last night was all in the saddle .

Can anyone help me on how to resolve this issue once and for all. Does anyone have (clear) online tutorials? I will need to transport the bike again in 2 weeks time to do the cycling leg of a charity triathlon and do not want to have the same issue again.

    Thanks

It could be that your wheel isnt fitted into the dropouts (frame) properly, the best way to make sure is to stand the bike up straight, hold the saddle and then open the quick release,if you hear/feel a bit of a clunk then it wasnt, also make sure the springs on the quick release are fitted right, one on each side and the smaller end pointing towards the axle. If none of that works, you may have slightly bent the hanger when putting it in the car.

    Thanks for the reply,

I double check the wheel fit into the dropouts yesterday and they are fine.

I put the bike in the car with the gear side up so dont think it was that.

Well then for one reason or another the gears need adjusting, theres lots of videos on youtube if you want to try your self but I would suggest bringing it to your LBS for them to have a look and maybe while your there you could invest in a bike rack for your car to avoid issues in the future:)

Assuming there's no wear to the chain / rear block (is the bike new? 2 months old? If so, drop it back to where you bought it), then I would try again with the drop outs - some times the wheel needs a big of swriggling about to fit snuggly. Failing that, you may need to adjust the rear derailleur cable tension. Sheldonbrown.com has a wealth of knowledge, alternatively put the phrase into youtube, you'll get something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkGBajG4TPc
