Just a random thought I had yesterday, where's the most unusual place you've run in the past few years?

I'm sure many will have stranger places then me but for me it was back in 2009, I did a 3km run at the location circled below.

Obviously not on the water but in this case on the top deck of a cruise liner about 10miles off the coast of St Martin.

The deck was pretty empty due to some rain and a thunderstorm a good few miles away so decided to make use of the running track they had :)

Queensboro Bridge in New York. It's about 1.5 miles long!

Phi Phi Island, Thailand. I somehow managed to get lost on that one.

This reminds me of holidays, I'm depressed now

ran across the Barrow railway viaduct at great island in wexford recently and throught the tunnel on the waterford side - the grating for the walkway made for a very interesting running experience....

Great place to run, very tough to get lost alright :-) Had to do a sprint from the far end of the island to the ferry after sleeping in

Mine would prob also be around the top deck on a cruise ship off the coast of Dubai....very weird doing laps of a boat out to sea when everyone else is sun bathing! The other would be on the coastal cliffs on the tip of south west Cork (Baltimore). Both runs were very enjoyable

Through tropical villages in the dark in Kerala, India during power cuts.
On a quiet stretch of road outside the small town of Maltahoe, Namibia - there were baboons near the side of the road.
Past the end of paved roads in Bou Goumez valley, Morocco.

Hmmmm. Interesting. It's a 30 minute drive from where I am now. Worthwhile experience?

Verrazano narrows bridge at start of NY Marathon for sure.
The endless bouncing of people on the bridge for a mile and a half, never stopped shaking.
The view of Manhattan in the far distance is something else once you come down on the Brooklyn side.

I walked about half way across it when I visited San Fran, its not exactly peaceful as the road is a toll-road but its a popular path with cyclists and runners and I'd imagine it has a fantastic view if there's no fog.

Sadly when I went over it there was very heavy fog with perhaps 100-150 foot visibility :(

I'd so go for it, you could always head up towards golden gate park then its a nice enough area.

Definitely you can also run into the Golden gate park easily enough. Beautiful park. Reminds me of the Phoenix park in many ways. Has nice drinking fountains as well which are handy if it's hot.

Mine was in the spectacular Yosemite National Park in California at 6,500 ft. Nothing prepares you for your first run at altitude, it's like your lungs are being ripped out. Saw a bear aswell, from a distance thankfully.

The streets, alleyways, laneways and bridges of Venice ... amazing, frustrating, bamboozling and awe inspiring all in one very early hour long run!

Snap. Forgot about that one! Also an amazing experience.

the Phoenix park! I seriously miss living in Dublin for the joy of running around a large park in the middle a city!

For conventionally unusual (!!) I guess it would be a toss up between the Sahara desert or the arctic circle. Both beautiful runs.

Would definitely recommend it. As a previous poster said you have got the Golden Gate park and if you want you can venture in to the city and throw in a couple of hills. It must be one of the hilliest cities in the world. The morning I went to run it it was very foggy so waited till it cleared, lovely run with a great view back to the city.

Depends how you define unusual. This is one location not likely to be repeated:

There's an area just beyond the Golden Gate Bridge called the Marin Headlands. It has miles of lovely trails. And if you run there at dusk you might see bobcats, coyotes and raccoons.

You mean after Cork City, right? :)

Ran it today. Parked up in Presidio, and ran over and back. A fantastic experience, but more for the pleasure of crossing the bridge, than the running experience. So many tourists (cough) who can't ride a bike in a straight line, or walk in straight line made it very difficult to count it as any kind of a run. Interesting that they have the counselling help-lines every 100 metres! Unfortunately some fog, but clear on either side.

1am, jet-lagged to bejasus in downtown Tokyo. A light mist was falling so every surface was reflecting the neon lights. Some buzz!

Took this pic just after I got back to the hotel

Was here for the cricket World Cup, right next door to our hotel was the race track. Delight to run around and see the horses on the gallops.

From Mount Everest Base camp along the Kumbu glacier back to our lodge.. It was without doubt the slowest and most exhausting couple of miles I ever did. I'd just given my 2 litre bottle of water to a severely distressed and possibly ill Sherpa porter and was feeling the effects of high altitude so decided I wanted to get back to camp fast.. A couple of dozen people were just tapering for the Everest marathon which was on the following day. Two of them were from Ireland, one guy was blind, the other was his friend guiding him. Hardcore.

I believe the blind runner you met Runforest run was Mark Pollock. Incredible bloke http://www.markpollock.com

"For the last decade, he has competed in the world's harshest environments. He survived sub-zero Antarctic temperatures as he raced to the South Pole, and Atlantic gales in the Round Ireland race. He suffered in scorching heat, running six marathons in the Gobi Desert in one week. He has run a marathon the North Pole, raced through the desert lowlands of the Syrian African Rift Valley to the Dead Sea and completed a high-altitude marathon in the Himalayas."

Unfortunately, he had a serious accident last year in which he was paralysed. He's currently trying to walk again. Have a read of his blog, very inspiring.

Interesting places I've run in also include Tokyo. Doing laps of the Imperial palace in an effort to make the Dublin Marathon. Japanese are running crazy. Great craic running around with guys in their 70's whizzing by you.

I also did an amazing little run in Syria last year, through Roman ruins in Palmyra. Alas, I don't think anyone tourists will be running in that country for some time.
