    Not sure if this is the right forum for this question.

    I keep getting "error 404, page not found" when I go to search anything on my 3 broadband home page and also when I try to start IE the same thing happens.

    What is causing this and how do I fix it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Can either be a remote server error, when it really can't find what you asked for, or it might be generated by your browser trying to be clever. Lets start with the basics.

    3 Broadband.
    Open a command prompt and type
    ipconfig /all
    and post back the results, also type
    ping www.rte.ie
    and post the results

    The first one might include something like this (I don't have 3 BB ....)

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros AR5005GS Mini PCI Wireless Network Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-FC-BA-0F-CE
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.3
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::211:fcff:feba:fce%5
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
    DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1
    fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
    fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
    fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 24 August 2011 00:13:53
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 24 August 2011 13:26:53

    and the second should look like this:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>ping www.rte.ie

    Pinging www.rte.ie.nsatc.net [89.207.56.140] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 89.207.56.140: bytes=32 time=1202ms TTL=59
    Reply from 89.207.56.140: bytes=32 time=76ms TTL=59

    Reply from 89.207.56.140: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=59

    Ping statistics for 89.207.56.140:

    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

    Ok, so your connection is giving you an IP address - 92.251.157.41 - and you can ping rte. Try pinging the site your browser wouldn't let you into. Check your not accidentally 'working offline' too.

    Your DNS services are working too, that why you can ping RTE by name. Thats good!

    Ping on the site seems fine, I actually got onto Boards.ie fine I clicked a news link on the 3 homepage then got onto here by typing www.boards.ie into the address bar but not much else is coming up. Cant even go onto Google.ie

    Also whats DHCP? because it say not enabled on mine but it is enabled on yours.

    DHCP is when the connection is configured to ask a server to assign an IP address, as opposed to having the same one all the time. Since you're getting one, and I don't have 3BB, it doesn't seem to be a problem. (as you can ping sites by name)

    What browser are you using ?

    Does your browser allow you to visit any site ?

    I'm going to bed now, someone else may help you later ... given sufficient info.

    I'm using Internet Explorer, it allows me to visit here and some other sites but not many, I can't get onto Google atall.

    Since you can ping rte.ie it means you're some way connected. What happens if you ping www.google.com in a dos window? If it gives you an ip address like the rte one does, put that ip into your browser address bar and see if it works then. If so, it looks like it's a kind of DNS issue

    It's a server error or timed out, maybe a broken link or else the page doesn't exist any more!
