Just wondering if anybody on here has got a Volvo 240?

In particular I'm thinking of the Volvo 244, pre-1980.

Have my eye on one at the moment and just wondering what they are like to live with and other peoples experiences of them...

They are grand to live with. I had a 2.3 auto estate, but it was a bit thirsty. Thirst aside though, very practical to own.

Solid, practical, low maintenance for an old car but the few times I tried one with a view to buy I found them a bit boring and soulless. Did have a later 740as a daily driver though; a daily is entitled to be a bit boring.

A guy on the Irish Volvo forums is selling a '77 Anniversary edition for 450 quid. All it needs is work on the exhaust.

    I was nearly tempted myself.

It could be got for less now. Owner is keen to move it on. Bargain for someone.

Interesting to hear them described as boring and soulless as the 240 seem to have the biggest following of any Volvo aside from perhaps the Amazon and P1800. Mind you I've got an MR2 to compensate for that :)

I've had a couple of 400 series Volvos but nothing as old as the one I'm looking at which is a late 70's model.

was considering taking 2.7 v6 out of my 264 and sticking in a diesel and using as an everyday car only problem its an automatic which would make it even more difficult

I was more than tempted! Needs an exhaust pipe from the manifold down, and some minor work on the rear arches. Coil springs on the back a little weak too. Other than that, its in very good condition.

Collecting it towards the end of next week:D

Made enquiries but just can't afford the outlay. Glad it found a home though :)

    Well done that man.

I rang the guy myself ... never got back to him ... as someone I know was into it. As for myself, too many Volvos as it is

Now all you need to do is find yourself a decent club ... oh yeah ... www.ivc.ie :p

We have got up close to two of them so far ... an 'OZA' reg. ex-Swedish Embassy one, and a '77' reg. member car.

Congrats again ... you've got yourself one of the definitive Volvo's, as I'm sure you know :)

    Regards,

    Tony.

    well wear :)

Will you do a before / after thread with pictures when you're getting the work done?

    Thanks All!

I'm mothballing my 85 W123 for a while, so this new motor should be similar but different!

I made a few enquiries, and some of the exhaust components are getting difficult to get a hold of. However, I've spoken to a guy who can fabricate the manifold down pipe. I will probably replace the complete system though.

I sourced replacement wheel arch panels for 30€ each, so they are on my buying list.

I'm sure there are other bits of fettling it will need that I have not thought of yet, but I will post pics and progress updates.

Best of luck....I'm ever so envious :)

Make sure to post some pictures when you get it.

It seems a right bargain of a car, even without taking into account the fact that it is a mega rare Anniversary edition.
