Driving costs Galway-Dublin

Anyone else get an IarnrodEireann leaflet through their door promoting rail versus driving.

    In it they claim it costs €29.54 to drive from Galway-Dublin (€25.04 petrol & €4.50 tolls). That's €59.08 round-trip, based on a 1201cc car & petrol @ €1.50/l.
That sounds very expensive. Do posters concur with this scenario?

Yes, if I was to put e40 into my 1.4 litre it wouldn't get me to Dublin and back. And with the traffic going across galway at the moment, thanks to our wonderful Council ...!

    :D

It costs me €75 to fill my 2 Litre car from (almost) empty.

I drove to Ikea Dublin and back and my my tank was down to approx 20% when I returned. There is an extra Toll if you drive on M50 Nothbound to Airport (Ikea) which is another few quid too.

    Sounds about right.

It cost me €20 petrol to drive from Ballinasloe to Maynooth a while back (1.1 litre), so no way would €25 get me from Galway to Dublin, unless there was no traffic and we're talking outskirts of both! I did make it from Kilcolgan to Tralee and back on €30 last week, pretty impressive.

Did they also put €20 return Galway-Dublin on the bus?

www.viamichelin.com says cost one way is:

    Costs
    21.73 EUR
    Toll 2.70 EUR | Petrol 19.03 EUR
    Time
    02h16 wich 01h43 on motorways
    Distance
208 km wich 185 km on motorways

but I think the tolls are higher/more now?

How much does that compare to a return train ticket ????
I paid 28.50 return from castlebar on the bus which is nothing short of a joke

1.80 and 2.90 I think. but can't be sure. The tag just beeps.

I'd say i'd little change out 50 quid on petrol round trip to Dublin from galway.

If you wanted to go to dublin city centre from galway city centre the train is great, but by the time you factor in taxi to the train station, luas+buses/taxi in dublin, it all adds up. Also the train from galway to dublin is fairly slow. You spend ages in clara, woodlawn, ballinasloe, etc waiting for the other train to pass.

Does the irish Rail leaflet mention anything about the cost of taxis/buses/trams to get from Hueston Station to whichever part of Dublin you are going to and being tied to their timetable? Or that if a car carries driver plus passengers, the price get a littler bit more competitive.

Besides, if you travel alone on a train in Ireland, you end up sitting beside Mr Chatty McBoring with stinky BO or Mrs Alco Sniffy who chats loudly on her mobile abut TV soap operas.

Costs me about 70 driving. (3.2 L engine) Now days, i use a 20 euro return bus from the Fairgreen.

The train, bar the odd reduced one online, is dear enough, particularly buying a one way at peak time.
The Gobus and Citylink are cheaper, faster, and won't freeze you to death in winter.

I still think train travel is the best mode of transport!

I only take it the odd time now, when I need table space, and even that is not guaranteed. My Mam would never get a bus over a train, but the heat issue, Messers on the train (harder to police) and faster service and loos on the bus swung her to gobus

Sticking to about sixty five on the motorway has decreased my fuel consumption a fair whack, I'm getting sixty to seventy miles more per tank.

Those costs sounds low actually. If their marketing dept had done it right (not that i would expect them to) they would have included the real costs of driving a car, parking etc...

But still, the train between Galway to Dublin is a horrible place to be. I took it twice, and it is a commuter train, not an intercity train. It stop everywhere, seats are uncomfortable and the bus is quicker and more comfortable.

I hate buses and I normally love going on trains and i would do it every time if it was a faster and more comfortable train with some services on it, but as it is now I would prefer to use car or bus. For 2 or more people it would be the car every time.

Yeah I tried that too in my 1.6 (Petrol), going at 100km/h instead of 120km/h saved me over 7 euro on a one-way. I tend to do that now.

By the way I'm normally spending about 30 in fuel plus the tolls (5 euro to city centre, 7 to the Airport, I have the toll tag so get cheap rate on the M50). But I have an old Petrol car, I'm sure you can get much better mileage in a modern diesel. I used to have a new 1.9 TDI company car in my last job, that would do 21km to the litre at 120km/h and almost 25 at 90km/h (on cruise control, 7th gear). But it still works out much cheaper driving an old car for the odd time I end up in Dublin.

Whenever I go away for a weekend I always opt to drive and park. Even though it's many times the price of the gobus/citylink it is just so much more comfortable and flexible. I just hate the bus. And the parking has come down a lot in Dublin Airport (especially outside of the holidays).

Train is a good second choice for me but as I usually get the first flight out (6am) and the last one back there are no train departures that would suit.

The petrol figure is high and I suspect based on theoretical figures. It does cost €9 in tolls (I use the M50 as well, so it costs me another 4).

I drive the route regularly, at current petrol prices (148.9c last night in the garage nearest my house in Dublin) it costs about €48 + €13 tolls (M50 - €2 with tag, M4 - €2.7, M6 - €1.8).

This price is based on tracking the fuel usage and distances over the period of 1 year. It comes out at 13.7km/l (approx 38mpg) for my car (1.4l petrol), generally driving at 120km/h on the motorways. The roundtrip distance is 440km.

In theory if I drive at 100km/h instead of 120km/h I can do Galway - Dublin, Dublin - Galway & Galway - Dublin again on a single tank.

That's terrible, I can get to Dublin and back on around a 1/4 of a tank of diesel. 1.6L C4.

So a year later, IarnródÉireann have issued another press release.
This time they claim return costs of €64 drive to Dublin versus €47 on the train and €19 on the bus.
The Galway to Dublin train is priced at €47 for an open return ticket, with promotions occasionally.. The train arrives in Dublin in an average of 2hr30mins.
Meanwhile, Citylink offers a direct service (2hr30mins), which costs €19 if booked online, while a return ticket with Bus Eireann (3hrs) is €18.05.
In financial terms, both rail and bus options are favourable to taking the car, with a return journey from Galway to Dublin estimated to cost €64 (including tolls) http://galwayindependent.com/stories/item/3527/2012-33/Galway-Limerick-service-goes-off-the-rails

€9.20 for both ways on tolls if you aren't going near the M50

I would use about a full tank in my yoke so €75 quid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭Padkir

Have done it very regularly over the last 6 months and it would cost about €48

1.9Tdi '04 Bora, generally try to stick to about 130kph on the motorway...

    Will do about 46-48 mpg. For this we'll say 47. Therefore 130miles / 47 = 2.77 gallons

    2.77gals * 2 = 5.53gals * 4.546 = 25.15 litres * €1.529 = €38.45 on diesel.

    €9.20 return tolls.

Only thing is you can add parking and the likes onto that to get the true cost if you have nowhere to park to there.

Can't understand people using €60/€70 on petrol for the return journey when they are going 120kph.

I get around 400 miles/650km from a tank on average if doing mostly long runs (best I ever got was 425 miles/710km but I was running on fumes), however my long run is Cork - Galway return and I can see my consumption increasing when I'm on the motorway sections as opposed to the normal roads. I could just about scrape Galway - Dublin - Galway on one tank I reckon though any driving around in either Dublin or Galway would put an end to it as my car drinks petrol on short runs. Its about 90 euro to fill the tank at the moment so would be about 35 euro in each direction including tolls.

Oh how I love my diesel!!:D

My fuel consumption is well up too when on motorway, e.g. it's done as much as 55mpg off the motorway vs 47mpg on it, and while I'm not a maniac I don't drive it too gently either, I like to get where I'm going!

I honestly think some of the reason for good consumption is simple good habits I've picked up, for example trying to slow down way before a red light and coming up to it at 10/15mph so you don't have to stop before it turns green. Simple things like that. However general driving I keep the boot down so very happy with my mpg both on and off motorway!
