Anyone hear any word whether they got it or not yet?

I didn't get an email, so I didn't get it.

Their system is possibly the worst. Random selection. It should be done by distance, etc, rather than picking names out of a hat. Hell, someone from Maynooth could get into on campus rather than someone like me, from Waterford. :(

I think they send you an email telling you if you didn't get accepted into it though?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,919 ✭✭✭Grindylow

    Really?

    I'm actually so annoyed. :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 50 ✭✭seanh12

I think so! I rang them yesterday and they said they'd have them sent out by "late evening".. Hope I get it.. Really don;t feel like looking for accommodation :/

Don't worry guys, they take foreeeever to send out the e-mails. Really just call them if you're impatient or wanna start looking for somewhere else.

I did. They're very unhelpful and don't tell you anything.

Still nada ... Wish they would have said 'Around 9 O'Clock intead of just a vague ' late evening'. I have things to be doing other than checking my email every 5 min ..

I've heard of a few that got it .. :/
Kind of getting worried now the effort of looking for accommodation .. !
Supposedly though they send them out in bunches & that they're very slow at sending them out .. :S .. ?
Think I'll ring them tomorrow ..

I'm pretty sure distance is taken into account actually.

Stop worrying anyway! It's not like you are going to be left homeless.

Firstly, calm down and try find out for definite if you got a place or not.
If you haven't all you need to do is start looking for somewhere to live. Either find some other people in the same situation as you or you can look for digs. Either way there will be places around!

Yeah I decided if I don't get on campus I'm just not gonna go. Gonna reapply somewhere else with a good system next year..

Eh, what? On campus accommodation is average at best, expensive at worst. 1 year there, and move out into Maynooth with friends. There is no shortage of nice houses.

Doesn't bother me. I'm a HEAR student, know absolutely no one, I've no friends there, never been there, know absolutely nothing about it and all the accommodation office can tell me is "no". I wish I'd have applied somewhere else now. This is utterly horrible.

Again, I fail to see how any of those are inhibiting factors unless as a HEAR student you were getting free on-campus accommodation. I went to Maynooth in first year knowing nobody, with no friends there, visiting the place only once beforehand. Suck it up and quit worrying, you're a student now :P

Kind of like a lot of people who have started in Maynooth over the years.... including me and loads of other boardsies here

    Don't be so melodramatic.

Hardly melodramatic. The accommodation office wouldn't even offer my assistance in finding something else.

    Completely melodramatic actually.
What makes you more special than anyone else in the same situation?
As TouchingVirus said. Suck it up. You're gonna need to grow up if you plan on surviving college.

Did you ask them for help or just expect it?
All they can do is give you the housing list really. Get that off them (email is prob easiest or if anyone has a copy) and start calling around

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

They aren't necessarily known for their helpfulness in there, sadly >.<

I asked about the housing list, but they said to call up for it, which unfortunately I can't because my parents aren't in a position to bring me for it. I also don't know where houses are/how far from college/whether it's a good estate or not. I don't know anything, at all.

That is all easily found information.

Try find someone else who has the list. In fact I'll ask around my friends for you. Also check all the online renting sites (daft.ie, rent.ie, etc)
Daft, google maps and the accomodation thread on here will answer all those questions for you.

You hardly think anyone else knew this stuff when they started looking either. You are not the first 1st year to have to look for somewhere to live.
In fact i still don't know where a load of estates are and I'm going into my third year!

Stop with the drama. it's getting you nowhere

    Thanks, and sorry.

It's just all getting way too much for me, everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong in the past 2 days and I've just turned into a wreck. Sorry. :(

Trust me you are going to have much bigger things to threaten to quit college over.
Just wait for your first big essay! :P

You can ask for the Accommodation Office to email you a copy of the accommodation list if you cannot make it to the office in person. As XxMCRxBabyxX said, there is always daft.ie and the other sites, there's even a Third Level Accommodation forum here on boards for people offering or seeking student accommodation.

A quick Google streetview will show you what estates are like and how far they are to the college, there's also the Student Accommodation sticky thread here in the forum to ask about where an area is, what it's like etc.

If needs must, you can do what others do and take a shítty room and watch out for the rooms left vacant by the dropouts in the first month or two, taking one of those instead :) Or you can live in comparative squalor (compared to the home comforts of living with the parents) like many others, and have an absolute blast. A roof over your head, a warm house that doesn't induce sickness (with excessive damp, or dirty conditions) is all you want. You mightn't even spend a lot of time in your house, going to other houseparties, society events, training with clubs, lectures, nights out in Maynooth etc :D

I've been here over 7 years and have never been short of a room to stay in despite not knowing anybody when I came ;) I choose not to live here anymore, but I could pick up a house very quickly if I wanted to - it's Maynooth after all :p

You're nowhere near panic stations yet man, chill out.

    Thanks so much. :o

I've been looking on Daft, but most places only seem to want mature students/PHD students on there, so I think I'll have to rule it out (for now anyway!). I'll try and find some other websites to search on and stuff, and hopefully if my parents will bring me, I'll head up tomorrow to try and find something.

Does anyone know how much deposits usually are?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

Deposits are usually the same amount as a month's rent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Yep, deposits are usually the same amount as the first month's rent. So if you pay €300 for your room, you can expect to have to hand over €300 to keep the room, and €300 for the first month's rent when you move in and get the key or whatever, your landlord will arrange it with you when they're filling you in on the rent schedule.

If you deal in cash, get a rent book and get them to fill it in when they call over. If they want it paid into their bank account, that's grand. Either way, get a receipt for the deposit and make sure there's a paper trail for the rent, just to be on the safe side :)

Would the end of next week be too late to get a good place?

I don't have enough for it yet as I haven't got my grant money and I can't get an overdraft until I've the letter from Maynooth of acceptance?

<_> Nevermind -^ It was on the NUIM list of housing but unfortunately it wasn't advertised correctly (Advertised it had more rooms than it should've).

Back to the hunt. :p Hopefully heading up tomorrow to find something!
