    You will buy a fantastic second hand acoustic guitar on www.adverts.ie for that kinda money. However, do make the trip out to X music and try out theirs. They've a room full of them so you can figure out what sound/feel you're looking for

    Couple of things to keep in mind;

    Play different guitars of different sizes, Dreadnought is the most common, but Jumbo, 000 and parlour guitars are all good. Different size guitars feel very different to play, and sound different too. Choose which size/shape you are comfortable with and like the sound of.

    At the very least, get a guitar with a solid top. I doubt you'll find an all-laminated guitar in your price range, they tend to be cheaper, but just make sure! All solid wood would be better than solid top with laminated back and sides, but it's not essential. Solid top is essential.

    Also keep in mind the different woods guitars can be made from, most are spruce, but there are some very nice cedar or mahogany guitars out there. They look and sound different to spruce - the difference is subtle, but it's there.

    Why not try x music? Dont get me wrong, I'm all for supporting my local shop, I think ive only bought a few cables and a strap in x music over the years. you wont get he personal service like you will in your local shop, but the selection of stock x music/music maker have is great.

    Having never been in either shop I'd be going to x-music too. Chain stores have a better range and can afford to sell cheaper. Beats a cup of tea anyday.

    OP if you are going to visit x-music take a look at those Applause guitars, always good quality for a decent price in my experience.

    Just a thought...

    I got my first guitar in 2001 or so. It was an SX guitar, at just over e100 I'd say. In 2003 I then got myself a Yamaha FG413S. The FG series are fairly popular. That one cost 325 euro

    I played two of the same type. One had lacquer on it, the other didn't. The one with lacquer sounded so much better.

    I'd recommend checking out a Yamaha for your second acoustic guitar. Of course, there are other brands out there but you should definitely try them and if you're going for a nice acoustic tone, with a budget of around e400, try not to go for one with a pickup in it.

    Good luck.

    To be fair, X Music are not a chain store, they are an independent Irish store, with one location. Just because their showroom is big doesn't make them a chain.
