Worried about eligibility

I'm 29, living at home and for the last several years, I've been working in my Da's garage, helping him out. It's a family business.
But it's been a bad year for us, and the work has all but completely dried up. I've been trying to look for work elsewhere, which is not going well at all but I'm not giving up. And so my friends have suggested I try going on the dole until I can find something, anything.

Well, I've printed out the form and it left me feeling very nervous about my chances of even getting looked at, let alone approved. I don't know what to do when your most recent employer is your own self-employed father, and there was never anything on paper. It was always just fix a car, earn cash in hand. I don't have a P45, which seems to be the biggest issue.

I have had a other jobs, years before. I worked in a video store (which is closed now) and I did make the minimum number of PRSI payments (just about). But I left to go to college for three years, and then when I finished college, I went working for my Da.

I'm just scared that I'll be entitled to absolutely nothing and be left with no way of getting out of this rut.
