'Abandoned' Japanese diver survives by swimming 20 miles through shark-infested sea

A Japanese diving instructor, Hishashi Koze, managed to survive in shark- infested seawaters by swimming 20 miles to the shore in 24 hours, after being abandoned by boatmen who has presumed him to be dead.

Koze along with his two friends had gone underwater but all were abandoned when boatmen on the surface lost sight of their air bubbles underwater, the Daily Mail reports.

However, a passing fishing boat rescued Koze's friends, Satoo Makoto, 40, and Ngu Teck Hua, 52.

Koze, 39, was left alone to defend himself, as he did not see his colleagues or the fishing boat that had rescued his colleagues.

"I kept thinking, I must survive - I must survive," the Star quoted Koze, as saying.

"I swam backstroke against the waves, covering, I think about 30km through the afternoon, through the night and through until this morning when I reached the shore", he added.

Koze said he struck out for what he hoped was the direction of the shore.

"As the light faded I followed the stars as I swam. I realized I had to be calm. The direction of the current told me I was in the right direction and I also had the help of a compass", he said.

All three men were kept under observation in Malaysia's Sarawak General Hospital before being discharged.

An experienced diver he probably had checked up on the currents in the area.

Fair play to him, but don't forget he would have been wearing a BCD (which is effectively a life jacket when on the surface) a wet or dry suit and fins.
