    Hey all,
I'm back in the auld sod for the time being and I need a new bike for the commute, training and the possibility of a bit of racing next year. Basically it needs to do everything, all bikes to all men. It doesn't necessarily need to be new but it does need to be within budget and big enough for me, a shade under 6'2" or 186cm. In the past 58cm in a standard Trek fitted well. Suggestions welcome. I'm well able to google but I always find that there's one that I've missed.
I've been looking online but I'd like to widen the net to include used or unadvertised bikes too.

My CX bike is still for sale. It's a 58.

Thanks Raam, I don't think I want a cross bike though. I remember the ad and it really is a nice bike though.

There was a Felt F5 on here somewhere last week for under your budget. Happy searching. I think the seller was vanhireboy or something like that.

I've got a Planet X SL Pro Carbon, size large, white frame, bought as a complete bike last year, that's now surplus to requirements. I was thinking of selling the frame, but I've enough spares to build a bike, wheels would be Mavic Open pros on Ultegra hubs, Ultegra brakes, ultegra shifters, FSA chainset, can't remember the model right now...
Anyway, it's probably going to be a week or 2 before I have it ready to go, if you're interested let me know...

I haven't really though about what price I'd be looking for to be honest, it will obviously depend on exactly what components I wind up putting together, but I think 1,000 would be a starting point...

Sounds interesting Statler but it'd be pretty a fairly top bike if I were spending that kind of money on a used bike. When you've something built up let me know the score.

Will do, as I said 1K is just a starting point, dependant on what I stick on it. Similar spec new is €1544 on the PX site at the moment, that's where I'm coming from with 1K.

    (Obviously I expect a bit of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n3LL338aGA )

Sorry forgot what sub-forum I was on ! You are probably looking for a second hand higher spec bike, so disregard my suggestion

Nothing wrong with that suggestion at all, at the risk of doing myself out of a sale that's some very good bang for your buck...

The 60cm canyon al 5.0 is in stock and it has a 57.5 top tube and a 60 cm seat tube which could possily fit you. Worth a check as it is a fantastic value bike for 899, then spend the rest on shoes, jerseys, etc;)

No way, 60cm is too big. I rode one before, a 60cm that is and I had to change to a 58 due to back pain. I'm not going down that road again.

Did you ride a Canyon 60cm? They are sized smaller, from what I have read and from what other owners have told me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,129 ✭✭✭coolbeans

No, I rode the Lidl Stratos 60 cm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

    I normally ride a 58 but if I was getting a Canyon it would be 60. I'm 6'3".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,129 ✭✭✭coolbeans

Hmmm...interesting but I'm a little bit under 6'2" and not very flexible. Isn't the rule generally "if in doubt go smaller"?

Dunno tbh. One bloke I know is 5'11" and has the 58 Canyon CF. Best to see if someone else can let you try their Canyon for size.

You could start up a 'Who'll let me try out their Canyon' thread. You'd be welcome to see how suitable my sized 52 Canyon isn't. I'm in Cork.

    I have a 2010 Specialized Allez 16 in a 58. Bought in late Jan/early Feb 2010 from Cycleways.

I have recently replaced the bar-tape and put both a new chain & cassette [12-26], and new brake blocks on it. It's a standard double [53/39] and is Shimano 2300. There are a few small marks on the frame - stone chips etc - but it is in other wise perfect condition. Never crashed or dropped. Aluminium frame & carbon front fork.

The wheels pictured are unfortunately not for sale, though I can put some AlexRims R500 on it that have very little mileage.

Relaxed geo so would be good for someone that's not very flexible, and I have a choice of stem lengths 110/100/90 that you could try out to see which suited you best.

    €500

also I have a lapierre 58cm aluminium racer with ultegra 6600 triple groupset plus ultegra hubs with mavic cxp33 rims and a few nice bits and pieces like a thomson masterpiece seatpost and specialized toupe saddle which would be a fraction under your budget if you're interested
