lost my contacts on ipod

i had all my contacts on my ipod which i used for emailing and eirtext quite a bit but recently i had to restore my phone and dont know how to get them back, to be honest i cant remember how i put them all on in the first place. iv tried restoring it but for some reason everytime i try to restore and update the 'session…

i had all my contacts on my ipod which i used for emailing and eirtext quite a bit but recently i had to restore my phone and dont know how to get them back, to be honest i cant remember how i put them all on in the first place.
iv tried restoring it but for some reason everytime i try to restore and update the 'session times out' so i cant update and then as a result of that cant restore my ipod to an earlier date.

does anyone know how to fix this problem or how to get all my contacts back
