Dental Planing and Scaling - Bone Loss Shock

I went to the dentist this morning for a filling. It was my first visit to this practice so they x-rayed my teeth. The filling was routine, but I got a shock when I was told that there is a significant problem with my front upper teeth. Apparently gum disease has been present and has gotten to a point where the actual bone that the roots of the teeth go into has disintegrated/receded quite a bit. My gums bled sometimes when I brushed them but I'm very good about brushing and flossing so didn't expect this at all. I have been referred to a specialist for root planing and scaling (to start with).

The consultation is €150 but the price quoted on their website is €800 - €2000 for the treatment (and I need to have it done several times, or on an ongoing basis). Obviously I don't want to lose my teeth, but I genuinely don't have that money. Does anyone know if there would be a noticeable price difference in Northern Ireland?

I'm also slightly terrified at the thoughts of the procedure itself. Has anyone had it done?
