Totally depends on the type of bar; most bar people, unless highly experienced, get below minimum wage and live on tips. Boston is good for Irish bars of course, but depending on when you go and for how long, the tourist spots (Maptons etc) may suit too.

What visa are you going on? Bars are fairly strictly regulated these days and you are unlikely to get a job without the correct visa.

Ah, I thought you already had one. You won't get a visa to do bar work long term, sorry. If you are a student, you can do the J1.

i have an interview for a job over there. Would be a j1 visa for 12 months. was just wondering what the experience would be like if it would be worth trying for a year and so forth and if could earn any decent money.

Remember that food service/bar staff in the US usually earn a low wage and are dependant on tips to earn, so you'd want to make sure you're in a place that's going to be busy enough that you'll make decent tips.

You wont be able to get a J1 12 month to do bar work just the summer one. 12 month visa work has to be related to what you did in college. its fairly strict and well moinitored. Bar work in Boston you either need to know someone, been here before and got to know owners/barstaff or have good experience. There is loads of young irish coming out here in the summer thinking they will walk into a bar job eaisly - and they end up slugging furniture for the summer! my advise would be to try and make some contacts and get here early next summer around end april/early may!! good luck whatever you decide to do!
