Hi, hoping someone here can lead me in right direction. Im wondering is there somewhere I can look at Medical Stats for Ireland. In particular deaths. Example, how many died from heart attack, how many died from negligence etc. Could some one here lead me in right direction?

    Try the WHO

Be cautious when using stats from ANY source though!

Thanks for that Jim. May I ask though why you mentioned caution using stats?

Am I naive in thinking they might be true figures?

That WHO site is not really what I am looking for . Is there anything more specific for Ireland.

Where could a find a list for medical accidents or negligence, or is it like everything in this country, hidden?

All stats can be skewed/biased and especially those with any sort of human judgement factor - e.g mortality data relies the reporting of accurate post-mortem data from many doctors in many different hospitals.

The example you mentioned - negligence - is a very subjective term and one I think wouldn't fall under the remit of medical stats - i.e. the coroner determines the cause of death to be, say blunt force trauma to the head along with evidence of older injuries then the court/judge take this and rule (along with other evidence) on whether the death was accidental/negligent/manslaughter etc.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I understand what you mean.

Would there be any way for me to find out how many fatalities were caused as a result of a medical procedure in this country, Jim , would you know?

I don't know if you came across this but the CSO website gives a good breakdown over the past few years here. Worth a look if you haven't already come across it.

Have you tried the 'HIPE' system run by the ESRI?

    http://www.esri.ie/health_information/hipe/

It's a pretty cool research tool. You can only find out about deaths that occurred in hospital though.
