My girlfriend and her friend are looking for accom in dublin city center. As they are both starting college in 3 weeks. They found a house that is prefect for the gf because its less than a 15 min walk from college. But her friend needs to get to UCD the house is basically at the Drumcondra train station. How could you get from Drumcondra train station to UCD or is it going to be a long awkward and pointless journey.

She could get the no. 3 bus or the 11. If I was her I wouldn't live there and go to UCD. too far away considering she's moving to dublin especially for college ? and then having to commute that far every day.

Where should they go then? One girl is going to DIT in Mountjoy Square and the other is going to UCD.

Unless they find something in the city centre, one person is going to have to compromise on the location.

To get to UCD from Drumcondra is about 30-35 minutes on the bus. It's not that far! Hardly a commute.

Train to Sydney Parade and a bit of a walk is an alternative.

Or walk to the 46a on Dorset Street.

Drumcondra is generally a good area to live in. It's a nice area, it's close to town and it's liked by students and some other country people.

As mentioned, there's reasonable good connections from Drumcondra to UCD.

3 bus - get it from Drumcondra Road to UCD - link

11 bus - get it from Drumcondra to UCD -- link

46a bus - Get on the bus to UCD at Blessington Street and get off it on the return at the other end of Blessington Street: It's a 10min or so (800m/900m) walk from Drumcondra Station and the bus goes past UCD - link

The 3 goes into UCD, the 46a passes the N11 dual carriageway side, and the 11 goes to "the back" or passes the other side of the campus. The 46a is higher frequency then the others and more direct than the 3. Depending on what part of campus the person needs to go to different ones may suit better.

Get a Student Travel Card (needed for student tickets on Intercity trains anyway) and then keep buying Dublin Bus student tickets -- cheaper and hander than paying by cash and they all offer unlimited travel on the normal Dublin Bus network on the day of use (so going back into town or anything does't cost extra).

The train option isn't great given the walk from Sydney Parade to UCD end, the need for switching trains, the higher cost over buses and due to frequency overall. But it could be good as a back up or if the person did not like any of the bus options and is rich enough for the train over bus.
