So I just came off the motorway and entered a roundabout into a 80km speed limit zone, coming off the roundabout there was then a hill. As I was Relaxing enjoying my ride, bang, police up ahead with their speed cameras. Looked down to see the speed I was doing, it was def over 80. I'd say it was 86.

So what happens now? Penalty points and Fine?

If your speedo said 86, you were probably doing 80-82kph. You should be ok.

    Can you elaborate ?

Speed Camera as in a Transit Van on the side of the road ?

    A Garda with a Speed Detector ?

A car parked on the side with an ANPR rig ?

Yes it was a Garda with a camera on a tripod! This is painful!

It wasnt a camera. it's a gun used to monitor your speed and if he didn't pull you then you're 99.9% clear and need worry no more about the situation.

Thanks for your response. I have seen Gardai with those speed guns before but I think this was a camera on a tripod!

if its a gardai using the speed gun he would have to stop you in order to fine you, they do leave you off unless you way over the speed limit, thats the annoying thing about the vans if your 2 or 3 kph over the limit they have you

You'll be fine, your speedo over reads by approx 10% anyway.

I've often passed them doing that little bit extra on the speedo and i'm still points free :)

Don't they need to take a picture of you speeding to prosecute you later?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭mossy2390

thats only the vans, the gardai do it on the spot

    No, they don't.

With the Gardai, they simply pull you over and take your details. No photo is needed.

They dont have to pull you over with the tripod mounted speed camera, you will just get the fine in the post.

Happened to somebody I know, thought he was fine when the guard didnt pull him over, wasnt too happy when he got the fine about a week later!

Yeah, but if they don't pull you over, doesn't that mean you're not going to be prosecuted?

+1, the box on a tripod is a camera system, it'll take your picture and the fine/notice will be mailed out. They generally seem to use it on busy roads (N7 at the red cow etc), presumably because they don't want to be running out and flagging people down in heavy/fast traffic.

They did flag a guy in a jeep down, but never flagged me down, but if it is a camera on top of the tripod then I am doomed to pay the fine! That REALLY sucks, but that's life. Thanks all for your responses and help. :D

Won't you see the flash if the camera took your pic?

    Hey there,

I was driving out of Monsterevin yesterday. When I passed a black/dark coloured speed van pulled in on the side of the road. Reason I spotted it late was I was acustomed to the white transit with the reflexive strips. Passed it doing around 87 ish dunno will i escape.

Whats the deal with them using black vans?, they clearly say on the garda website that they are white?

    Any comments guys, cheers

It's the GO SAFE vans that are white. I expect some of the Garda Gatso vans are still hanging about.

Go safe ones are all sorts of colours too. The Gardai are holding on to there own vans at the minute and they have a nice few of them.;)
