Suggestion for Computer Programming/Pop Science Book as Gift?

I'm buying a birthday present for someone who has expressed interest in learning computer programming. He works at a large software company but isn't involved in any programming himself. I've seen "Beginning Programming for Dummies" but I wonder if it would be suitable at all.. I remember him mentioning C++ and maybe Python programming languages but maybe they're too difficult for a beginner to learn in spare time?

Perhaps someone has an interesting book on computer programming in the popular science genre either? I'm sort of stuck, any advice would be appreciated because I know very little about any of this but I'd like to get him something he'd like :) On that note I saw a great "Art of Programming" boxset but unfortunately I can't afford it :( Maybe for Xmas.

Python is a lovely language and is up and coming not sure of any good books on it thought to be perfectly honest!

If he's interested in programming he'd enjoy trying out any language more than likely!
