When Facebook and Twitter first came out, I thought to myself, this is absolute nonsense. Then after a while looking at them, I began to get hooked. Over the last day or two, I've started to read some postings on Twitter that have made me fall off the seat laughing. There are some really funny people out there. Should be called Titter instead of Twitter. Anyone else having a laugh on Twitter ?

What i like about twitter is that it trains you to be concise in your opinions.
I notice on boards sometimes I have a problem whereby I might use three sentances where one would suffice; twitter can help you in dealing with that.

Deliberately being succinct in this message now...

I thought the idea of twitter was stupid when it came out at first, and I still don't quite understand how it became popular so quick, but I recently joined, not to tweet, but it's a great way of getting all your news sources in one place, just the headlines, no bull**** - be it world news, tech news, etc.. It's quite handy.

Yes but only to follow certain people, quite like it.

Remember the meeting with the IMF broke on twitter, its done a lot to be honest.

If anything important breaks on twitter, someone will post it on boards anyway. It's 90% rubbish I find.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

An adult comic started in the 80s. Famous for Top Tips - really silly suggestions. Twitter is carrying on the Top Tips traditions. Anyone who says that Twitter is nonsense is probably right. However, it's funny nonsense !

I use twitter. I'm not addicted to it.

Great for realtime news. All depends on who you follow...will dictate your experience of it.

Eg follow Jedward and lose all faith in humanity in less then 10 tweets >.<

No. I closed my twitter account ages ago. Its absence hasn't quite left a gaping hole in my life.

Twitter is fantastic. What many people don't understand, and I was guilty of this when I first joined, is that what you get out of it is related to what you put into it. So it's worth taking the time to find some interesting people to follow who tweet about things related to your interests.

Another thing you need to learn is how hashtags work, these are how you get involved in conversations and discussions that interest you, they are also a good way of gaining new followers. Hashtags are great for live events and live reactions to events, you just have to treat everything you read with a hint of skepticism and over time you will find reliable tweeters that you can trust more than others.

It took me a good few goes to really 'get' Twitter but, once I did, I did find myself getting kind of addicted to it, although I do have a tendency to abandon it for stretches at a time.

More of my friends use facebook, but I prefer twitter (maybe that's why?)

I find that my twitter homepage is full of stuff I actually want to read, wheras my fb homepage is a load of stuff that's completely useless.

Reminds me of that popular saying: 'Twitter makes me like people I've never met and Facebook makes me hate people I know in real life.'

It's so much better than facebook. I would say twitter actually makes life better. Facebook is a cancer.

Why anyone would want to go on the internet & read random things that other people have posted is beyond me.

    Viz top tip...

DON'T waste money on expensive iPods. Simply think of your favourite tune and I hum it. If you want to "switch tracks", simply think of another song you like and hum that instead.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭MungBean

Twitter is great for gauging public opinion on live events. Its basically a poll with people saying "I like this" "I hate that". Also good for keeping in the loop of whatever your into.

Whereas facebook is for friends Twitter is more so for connecting with other people of similar interests. You dont have to talk to anyone, be friends with anyone you just have to be interested in what they have to say. Of course theres an awful amount of eejits on it but shur there’s eejits everywhere ya go.

I've come to quite enjoy Twitter. Not that I didn't like it before, but I never really used it. I've gotten into it now though, and it can be a very useful tool. It has revealed itself to be an extremely powerful medium through which news travels very fast and has been instrumental in what has happened in Egypt, Iran, Spain and even Libya. While for the most part it is not a site where serious debate and heavy discussion is going to take place (it has never claimed to be such), it has become a very potent force in communication and has played a significant part in social change around the world. I don't really know how anyone could argue that it has not had some positive impact.

Twitter is only really enjoyable when there are recurring hastags like #ge11 (general election), #aras11, #norris, or even #rot11 (rose of tralee).

For most everyday affairs there is no single hashtag for everybody to get behind and this blanks out the smaller events that tend to be picked up by the likes of politics.ie or boards.ie

I am following multiple job announcement accounts such as Microsoft and Google jobs. Google regularly sent tweets out advertising available jobs in the Dublin area and I forwarded many of them to friends looking for positions. I wouldn't easily dismiss it.

    Example:
