...are my number one pet peeve. I wish this one particular person would just fúck off and mind his own business! I seriously can't do anything without him questioning what I was doing or where I was going..

'Oh I saw your car parked at so-and-so's house last night, what were you doing there?' Oh I don't know, maybe i just decided to park there so you would have something to talk about

I also hate when you are on the phone and the person who you are with makes it obvious that they are trying to listen in...or, on hearing your phone ring, they actually come into the room and stand there, trying to find out who's on the other line...(usually family members )

    knobs!!!!!!!!

    Rant over

Only job is to turn the tables. Just say something like "I heard your still drinking heavy" in a condescending tone, then leave the room before they can reply. Nosy people hate being talked about in a negative light.

Ireland and the very nosy nation, moreso even than the UK.

It is perhaps a trait that has developed from centuries of interdependence between individuals living in small agricultural clusters, trading amongst themselves, marrying amongst themselves, and living in a sort of 'family' under the unity of the paternal church. Irish people are very 'familiar' with one another - we tend to address each other and engage with each other very casually. I think that's a part of the 'friendly' Irish persona.

If you spend time in a place like rural France, the local customs of acquaintance is much less developed. It isn't as unusual for rural French neighbours to be broadly unfamiliar or distant with one another unlike as would typically be the case in rural Ireland.

Nosiness (neighbourly curiosity if you prefer) is, I should add, very much a rural tradition in Ireland imo.
