    Planing a golf stag.

Two rounds Friday , Saturday in Carlingford/ Dundalk area.

    Help needed.

Is this a good spot ?

What courses? Good courses, but a few high handicap lads with us.

Would the courses put up with it ?

    Would Saturday be tricky ?

Is Dundalk any good, lads in work, not me, saying the whole area is dangerous , lol.

Haven't played it yet (dying to but not up that area much) but Concra Wood (Castleblayney) gets lots of praise on here and it's in the neighbourhood. See http://www.concrawood.ie/

    Thanks so much,

What about the area, Staying in carlingford? --- bunch of lads mid thirties?

May stay in Ddalk , but most would not mind more quiet pint. It's the odd single lad is the problem.

Sorry this is a golf thread:)

In terms of golf, there are 3 handy options.

Greenore is a bit of a marmite course. It's set beside the sea but isn't a links, it's pure parkland. So it's parkland with regular 30mph winds. It has 2-3 really spectacular holes, but for my money, it's mostly bland. Many people though absolutely adore the course. It's about 1 mile from Carlingford.

Dundalk GC is a cracking parkland course, a proper old style, tree laden, well presented challenge. It's perhaps up and back in places, but has a nice rhythm, and smells of class. It's expensive enough though. Probably 10-12 miles from Carlingford.

The Ballymascanlon is a shortish hotel course about 8 miles away. It's old, well maintained and quirky. If you've many social golfers in your group this is probably the best option. The trees mean you have to hit it straight, but it's short enough and interesting enough not to annoy the casuals.

I'd think Concra Wood, at 30+ minutes, is too far away for your group.

In terms of where to stay, Dundalk is a ****pit and I wouldn't recommend it to an enemy. It's a bit rough on it too.

Carlingford is stag friendly and a drinker's heaven. If you're into clubbing and chasing skirt it might be a tad sedate, though it is normally coming down with hens every weekend, so there's plenty to look at!

Try the Ballmacscanlon Hotel. Good Hotel with its own 18 hole course.
Its not Augusta but its a nice little course and might just suit you given
that you will be falling out of the either the bar or the bed on to the first tee...

Stay in Carlingford, enough class pubs to keep you happy.
PJ O'Hares is the centre of town but this one a pitching wedge away is my favourite. http://www.taaffescastle.com/

As said before, Greenore is a good place to play. Not sure how strict they are but I have played in their (cheap) Tue open day and it's a friendly club in general.
Ballymascanlon would be easier to get a group of hungover lads onto though..:)

There's actually not as many good courses there as you'd expect given the scenery - go to Donegal instead buddy!!

Avoid golf in Dundalk Golf Club at the moment, greens heavily sanded.

Did something similar recently. Booked a big holiday home in Carlingford that slept 8-9. Played GreenOre and really enjoyed it ( might be worth booking early ). Nice little town with a few nice bars and restraunts and a "disco" on a saturday night.

+1 for ballymascanlon, its a mature track thats always well kept and the high handicappers will be able to score on it. carlingford on a wkend is always very lively, good spot

Ok lads , will Play Ballymascanlon the Friday -- easy warm up.

Then Saturday thinking Greenore --- but open ears. Sounds not as hard as it looks.

Could be hard to get in there Saturday - need tee time after ten, for unspeakable reasons. Hangovers.

If you reverse your days you'll have a better chance. Ballymac has no members so it's a case of booking your slot at weekends. Greenore has a strong Saturday members contingent. Ive actually found Dundalk easier for visitor access on Saturdays; Sundays seems to be their members day.

Sorry I didnt do the booking but it was a holiday home 5 mins walk/stagger from the town. Seemed to be loads available. Worked out quite cheap

Maybe say golf society rather than stag when booking ;)

Agree, play Greenore on Friday before things get too messy...

I do similar weekends in Carlingford semi-regularly and go golfing with non-regular golfers. Saturday in Greenore is definitely full up in general - and the members will definitely get a bit miffed if a bunch of hung-over twice a year golfers clog up the course. The Ballymac is set up for this sort of thing so it's a much better option. It's a bit further but you have to drive anyway and it's only really 10 minutes further down the only main road in Cooley. Greenore will be quiet on Friday and will appreciate the green fees more (it's also perfectly enjoyable for a high-handicapper unless the wind is blowing a storm).

Greenore is a much better track, but the Ballymac has it's charms too.
