Is a root canal necessary just now?

It's close to 3 months since having my third child, and I was experiencing on and off pain in my 1st premolar which already had a deep filling in it. After x-ray my dentist said there was further decay and original filling was right up against my nerve. She said she could not guarantee whether a new filling would solve the problem and said eventually I could require a root canal. In the meantime she cleaned out the filling and put in a temporary white 'dressing' filling. She referred me onto a dental surgeon and I have an appointment scheduled. It's a consultation first with a 90eu fee for another x-ray etc. etc. and to determine if my tooth is 'suitable' for root canal. They also mentioned a crown after root canal. I could be looking at well over a 1000 eu for one tooth. I had a crown on the tooth right next to it which only lasted 11 years and abcessed and needed extraction after my second child. It's now been a week since the temporary 'dressing' was put in by my dentist and I have not experienced any discomfort or pain in it so far. I do not want to jump the gun and get any unnecessary expensive dental work done at this point if a regular filling will suffice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. What would you do? I am planning on cancelling the dental surgeon and having my dentist just put in a new filling and see how it goes. With three kids under 6 years, 1000 eu would be better spent on them rather than on unnecessary dental work...for now anyway... What do you think? Thanks much.
