Two lads allegedly thrown out of Cork pub for kissing

    http://www.examiner.ie/breakingnews/ireland/two-male-students-ejected-from-cork-bar-for-kissing-517505.html#ixzz1VnTnXLRL
Two male Cork Institute of Technology students were allegedly thrown out of a bar in Cork city on Saturday night for kissing on the dancefloor.

They say they were approached by a bouncer at the Old Oak on Oliver Plunkett Street and issued with a warning after sharing a brief kiss.

They later kissed again on the dancefloor and claim security told them to leave at that point.

When contacted by Cork's RedFM this evening, one of the students said that he is seeking legal advice, while the Old Oak said there was no manager available to comment at this stage.

No statement from the Old Oak's management yet, which is disappointing and certainly makes me suspicious that this was a decision motivated by homophobia and not because the two lads were doing anything wrong.

Over 200 people have already liked a boycott page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Im-boycotting-the-Old-Oak/276959918986005

A friends birthday was here a couple of weeks ago and I was there with my bf. I always thought it was a nice enough place; shame to hear something like this happening. :(

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Suprised they haven't given a statement to try and explain the bouncer's actions.

Surely that would solve it, by either admitting fault or giving a reason and awaiting a response.

    I'm amazed they haven't given a response.
They'll lose a lot of custom over this, and it won't just be gay people. I wouldn't set foot in a bar that had those kinds of attitudes.

Almost at the 2000 mark now!
And I completely agree with the previous comment; it's very strange that they have yet to give a statement. Either they feel like they did nothing wrong and don't need to try and justify it, or they're oblivious to how much offence this has caused and how much business they'll potentially lose as a result.

    It's gone over 2000 now.
These things can snowball very quickly, particularly after 9am when people get to their desks.

    What is a maul fest?

Is it lots of couples take over the place and so security won't be able to throw out everyone?

It's a good old fashioned Cork version of a PDA (Public Display of Affection)

Wow I'm surprised this has gotton a write up in the paper and so much attention on facebook! It's great obviously, because it's terrible that in this day and age two guys kissing get thrown out of a bar.

But at the same time, if I was thrown out for the same reason, I'd probably be pissed off on the night and then wouldn't think about it any further.

Anyway, I hope the management issues an apology!

Solicitors cost money, so a claim probably going in
You don't pay a solicitor just to force an apology

I've seen plenty of heterosexual couples admonished for playing tonsil tennis in a bar. ..They stop usually , then its over ...they are not trying to make a point ...just kissing .

Theres no need for solicitors...its the usual ****e. Lets see how far we can push this, attitude . It might get us in the newspaper . Cue picture of john & Jack arm in arm on the paper with sad faces outside the Oak .

It would be easier for these pubs to put up a sign on the door . No public Displays of affection and be done with it. Then couples could sit at opposite sides of the bar and phone each other when they need to talk to each other .

Article says it happened on the dancefloor, you must walk around with your eyes closed not to notice PDAs (and worse) on the dancefloors of pubs and clubs in this country.
And I've never seen anyone thrown out for it.

After reading some of them stories, to make it clear, I mean I've not heard of anyone ever been thrown out for PDAs (kissing).
But holy shit, some of them stories would make a person feel queezy.

Could the people involved be trying to draw attention to the archaic attitude shown by the management and security rather than compo.

I doubt that compo is the motivation , Much as i doubt that they "forgot" to stop when initially asked by the bouncer . They continued " for the cause " ....the cause has to stop , we get it your gay ...we can handle it . Now put your penises away and move on ....next you'll want civil partnership , or maybe marriage or god forbid even adoption ,,,,where will it all end

It might end in a tolerant world where people don't tell us to put our penises away:rolleyes:

Just doesn't make sense for it to simply be "oh its because they were gay".

If they didn't like homosexuality or PDA's then surely the bouncer would have just asked them to leave the first time.

I know. It's almost as if gay people want to be treated equally.

Seriously, one of the most idiotic things I have read on Boards. And I am here quite a bit.

Why don't you just blame straight people. They are the ones that keep having gay babies after all.

On topic: The Old Oak is a shithole anyway. It's a breeding ground for thirty to forty year olds looking for the score and dancing embarrassingly to really loud shit music.

official statement from both parties involved:

Joint Statement re incident in Old Oak – Friday 19th into Saturday 20th August 2011

We, the parties involved in the incident last Friday night, met today, 23rd
August, to discuss the events which occurred.

After deliberations and discussions both parties accepted and conceded that mistakes were made by all involved.

The Old Oak apologised for any offence which was taken, but stressed that no offence whatsoever was meant or intended as we are not and never have been anti Gay.

Equally the couple involved, who wish to remain anonymous, accepted that they could have handled matters in a better way.

Both parties look forward to continuing good relations and custom.

have you a link to a source? i;ve seen it on a facebook page but there is no evidence to suggest this is official. i could easily make a facebook page and have an "official" announcement saying the oposite.

not saying this is fake, just wondering if there;s any evidence it's real

also i was in there a few months ago and a female friend of mine was kissing a guy on the dancefloor and was warned to stop by a bouncer...

    none required

so given the joint statement that there was fault on both sides , why then are the lads allowed to keep their anonymity while the reasonably good name of said establishment was dragged through the mud . I'm sure facebook is not going mad demanding their identity be revealed when they have been baying for blood over the last few days about the Old Oak

That Facebook page for the Old Oak has been there for ages, and its their official page, and they were the one to post it first, AND its already been reported on as their official statement.

ok, just wondering because i only saw it on a random "old oak" fb page which had nothing else on it i.e. any older posts

I'm convinced that 25% of bouncers have this.

According to the discussion on The Last Word on Today FM yesterday, one of the guys isn't out and so isn't willing to let his identity be known.

Ah, I said that jokingly...well half jokingly. Most bouncers are pretty cool but there's a significant minority of them who just seem to be on a total power trip. I often wonder is that half the reason why these types take the job, for the bit of power.

Saw from the AH thread on this that the manager finally gave a response:
    http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland...ar-165209.html

Seems like a reasonable response, just came too late to avoid the whole shítstorm
