Good people of Motors, I'm hoping some of you could give me some advice on what I should price a car at. We're planning on selling my hubby's Ford Escort and buying a 4wd for the winter. Only thing is I have no idea what to even expect to get for it, having looked on donedeal and carzone etc there's a massive variance in price on them. The details for his are:

    Make & Model: Ford Escort
    Year: 1999
    Engine: 1.4l
    Mileage: 106,000
    Fuel: Petrol
    Transmission: Manual
    NCT: 01/13
    Tax: 9/11
Other details: Metallic blue colour, hatchback, 5 door, sunroof, drives great, two new wishbones fitted at the front, bluetooth radio/cd player. Car is in great condition, there's a couple of little scrapes and chips etc in the paint and the inside is clean, although it is 12 years old so it's a bit 'oldy' looking if you get me.

What do you reckon I should advertise it for and realistically what would we expect to get for it?

    Thanks!

I can't imagine you'll get more than a couple of hundred for it. Not really too sure.

Should make 500. I havent seen one of those escorts on the road in a dogs age.

I'd take some good pics, ask €750 and accept €500?

    About 200 euro

    This

Advertise it on Donedeal and maybe throw a link in the bangernomics thread.

Make sure it is properly cleaned and that the pictures are of a good standard from all angles

Thanks guys, we'd be happy with €500 for it so I reckon we'll put it on at the €750 mark so that'll give some room for manouvering. I think if it was a case that it was only worth €200 we'd probably hold on to it until the NCT runs out and scrap it.

My plan is to give it a good hoover and clean inside, give it a once over with the turtle wax outside to make it nice and shiny and put a new set of hubcaps on it cos the ones that are on it at the moment are a bit tatty looking.

Going to stick it on Donedeal, and Adverts. Any other places worth putting it? I'd be reluctant to use buy and sell again, last time I had a car ad with them, they wouldn't take it down, so I went in and edited to say it was sold but they kept changing it back! I was getting calls about it for months!

I put a link in the bangernomics thread to help you out.

Someone might be looking for something cheap

    About 200 euro

If it were mine I wouldn't let it go for less than double that, I expect you'd get closer to €500 than €400 too. The year's test will sell it.

    +1

It does have a long NCT and it maybe hard to believe, but these cars have fans around here :)

Much more sensible advice there. Around here there are stil plenty of escorts, maybe not inside the pale but out in the nether regions of munster i still see loads. They often go for a good bit more than 500 too. Depending on the area the OP is in it should EASILY sell for 500 if it's in good shape but i see nice tidy ones with long test going for 750-1000 regularly enough, now whether that's "too much" or not is another matter but around here there's still something of a market for them

Thanks so much for all the help guys!! I've already had a couple of PMs about it and we haven't even done an advert yet! I'll have to send the hubby out with the hoover tonight to get it nice and clean for viewings.

One thing I just noticed in my OP I put that the tax was up in 11/11, it's not, it's up in 9/11. Don't know where I got that date from. NCT and all other stuff is correct though.

Somewhere around the 450-500 would be an acceptable figure, but knowing donedeal asking 800 would suffice because you'll get lads offering you 200 eitherway.

    Aye.

At least on adverts you don't have to talk to them for 10 minutes to find out that's what they are offering.

    Then again I prefer donedeal

    Adverts:

    Buyer: "offer 2000 cash"
Seller: "accept your offer of 2000 cash"
Buyer: "sorry only have 1500 cash"

    Donedeal:

    car sold within the day...

Hiding in the corner! I may have been a bit pessimistic with my 450 but I'm surprised it got 650!

OP what is it being replaced with? Are the 1.4's actually as horrid on fuel as "they" make out?

Me too, I thought €500 would have been there or thereabouts. Still, it's not a bad buy at €650 either.

We replaced it with a landrover freelander, we live up the mountains and need something to get out of the house if we have another bad winter seeing as we'll have a baby this year. Funnily enough the hubby was always commenting on how light the car was on fuel!

Unfortunately that gem of hilarity is wasted due to the fact that the car is sold.

On the other hand it give me the opportunity to point out to you that these kind of posts aren't acceptable in Motors. If you continue posting like this, your time in Motors will be short.

Please read the Charter before posting again.

deanswift got an on-thread warning because he's new to the forum. You're here long enough to know that stupid posts like this (especially when they directly follow a Mod instruction about stupid posts), so unfortunately I'm banning you for 2 days for disruptive posting/ignoring on-thread Mod instruction.

Just because a car is old doesn't mean it's bad.

At risk of going off topic I'd have suggested a set of snow chains instead of buying a 4x4, lateral thinking and all that.

But hey, the freelander ain't a bad choice for light duty 4x4.

Pajeros/ landcruisers would be an expensive compromise out of season...

Still here you know the saying about a fool and his money. I guess the op was lucky to meet a fool ;)

What a car is worth has nothing to do with an opinion from an internet expert in second hand car sales like yourself...

It has everything to do with where demand and supply meet. They sure met here and both are happy with their equilibrium ;)

Was it the "car" do you think or the long NCT i.e. NCT: 01/13..that did it....interested in peoples views...i.e. if this was say...an Opel Astra or Citroen or Toyota or something like that with the same NCT length/engine size etc, would it have gone for similar or less or indeed more?

There's always a market for a reliable, cheap, and easy to fix car with a long NCT. Well done OP, I think you did well but I reckon €800 wasn't unattainable. People want cheap, reliable hassle free cars these days and your little Escort fit the bill nicely. IMO you should never sell an NCT'd sub 1.4L for less than 600 especially one as well known as the late 90's Escort. I still reckon I'd have gotten the 800 though. :)
