read only doc

    I have a word doc which I cant open cos it says "read only" so.. to ask a simple stupid question what exactly does that mean? and can I recover the doc?
    A lot of work went into this doc hours and hours of brain storming. help

    it could be a file on a cd or in a zip file
    or file permissions
    or it's already open in word (in the old days this was common when word crashed - worked again after restart or loging in again)
    or werird stuff


    if all else fails , file , save as , and choose another filename, the new file should be writiable

    thanks for your suggestions... sadly I think he must have deleted the contents. the file is still there but just comes up a blank page. :-(
