My neighbour has bought a second hand PC with XP pro SP1 and is trying to connect to the internet through his UPC cable modem. So far as I can make out the machine was either wiped or just not used much. It won't connect to the internet and I reckon it used to be networked with other machines in the business he bought it from.

I've rung his ISP. They've no idea. I don't have recovery media to do a system restore. Any ideas what I can do?

Under network connections choose the LAN connection right click and choose properties. Then highlight Internet protocol and choose properties. Make sure automatically obtain an IP address is chosen.

It may have been set with a fixed IP address and default gateway.

Check in internet options that it's not set up for dial up or proxy to.

In connections make sure there's no dial up setting (delete it if there is) click on LAN settings and make sure automatically detect settings is ticked.

Quick update. Still no luck. Reckon the machine has a dubious copy of XP pro which is why the thing doesn't work. Hoping to send off for the original recovery media from compaq or techguys (PC World)
