Yes. You only have to pay 1 HD sub for the house regardless of how many multiroom HD boxes you have.

I thought this was only starting in september?

Yeah but you'll still have to pay their rip-off multiroom charge!

The big problem is the price of the second HD box. If like me you have a Sky + box for your multi-room box and a HD box as your main one then Sky are looking for big money for a second HD box.

€149: I think this is what I was quoted

Could you try the old 'I want to cancel my account' business to get the price down or are they likely to just cancel you

    Chuck out the Sky box.

Buy or build a decent HTPC.

Get a DVB-T dual tuner card for the Irish channels.

Get a couple or more DVB-S cards and connect any available satellite cable to them.

Set up DVBViewer recording service to act as a server on your home network. Add gigabit ethernet cable to each room and connect the cable to your router. If you can't have Gigabit Ethernet cable around your house set up a homeplug network but don't tell Watty.

Use a popcorn hour media server in each room, configure them to use the Unicast IPTV service from your server PC and connect a tv to the popcorn hour box.

Genuine free to air TV In each room and not a penny to Sky. And you will have Irish and UK TV on one EPG if you live in a Saorview service area.

Seriously? No offence but the vast majority of people;-
Don't think they have a home network.
Wouldn't be able to set this up anyhow.
Would wonder about the initial cost and ease of use in a household with multiple levels of technological experience. PC to act as server - €500+, Popcorn box €200+. 3 DVB cards €75+. Even so I'm being simplistic with my costs and putting them on the low side.

Can't you just buy a 2nd hand Sky + HD box and get it paired to the multi room card? That's how I upgraded to a Sky+ HD box from Sky+ (no HD sub and no multi room). I'm sure that works with multi room as well.

A lot is possible if you think outside the (Sky) box. Sorry if I took you outside of your comfort zone.

I rang up today to get Hd in one of the rooms. (I have multiroom already).

Was told current offer was free HD box plus free installation. (had expected installation to be 30 quid).

Then was told that they were now allowing HD subs to cover all rooms, and that I could have a second box (a 1TB box) for 49 euro's.

    I had him confirm the offer ... 1 * HD box & 1 * 1TB HD box for 49 euros (w/ no installation fees) plus the 15 quid p/m.

Hadn't expected to be talked into a second HD box, but at 49 euro's (for a 1TB one at that) ... there ya go.

Indeed, HTPC's are only for enthusiasts. The idea is great but they are costly and require expertise to set up and maintain. I still have a DVBS2 Satellite Card, but now use a Humax PVR and a Sky HD box. I also intend getting a couple of Combo boxes from Tony.

Moshea, I asked them about that €49 offer when I rang up but the lad in Cork said that offer was only for people taking out multiroom for the first time and as I already had multiroom I was not entitled. It seems you got lucky!

Exactly- I agree. That's why I have a multi sat set up receiving 42E-45W, so the concept and use is not outside my comfort zone - perhaps you just assumed otherwise? However the multisat system isn't used by the others in the house (they don't care for it or want to watch sport), so as such we also have a Sky box for simplicity and ease of use.

While I appreciate that the HTPC is a great idea for a single combined 'total TV' solution, the point that I was making (and NewHillel has here as well) is that for the average user a HTPC isn't a viable solution.

    Anyhow we're heading way OT.

Called sky this am, got qouted 209(inc. setup) euro for 2nd hd box & if I did not want the 1tb box total would be 249 !! Mentioned some of the offers mentioned here & was told no way could those offers have been made.

Does that mean it is €40 more expensive for a HD box with less storage?

If I buy 2 HD boxes for my multiroom subs (Have 1 HD box & Sub) is it as simple as plug n play or just ringing Sky to pair the cards to the new boxes.

Is anyone doing trade ins of Sky + boxes for HD boxes?

Rizzo - Do you already have HD?
Sky+HD 1TB: New customers are entitled to one €149 box when taken with the HD pack, any additional boxes thereafter or when taking without the HD Pack are €249. €49 for Sky TV customers taking their first HD package (€15pm) or Sky+HD customers adding Sky Multiroom (€15pm per box).

If not the offer should have been good (according to their website).

I kinda knew when I was talking to the dude that I was doing well, as at one point he explained to me that a piece of the deal had expired a few days back (I think it was the initial free box/free install offer) but after leaving me on hold for a bit he said it was fine. Then to get that together with the €49 1TB offer - it seems like I got two different "first time getting HD" offers at the same time ..... which seems lucky in the extreme.

Between here and the DS forums - the vast array of individual offers/deals combined with who gets them and who doesn't - does genuinly appear random.... though I've no doubt there's some method to it.

That's what i was told this am, the person i spoke with did not know why the box with a smaller hard drive was more expensive

A Sky agent called to friends house and told that HD subscription charge was to be abolished in new year, as my friend had multiroom he offered two new free HD boxes with installation cost of 49 euro and no subscription charge. My fiend gave him his number and told to call back when it happened.

Anybody else here is HD subscription being cancelled in new year, I know it was reduced to a single charge for more than one HD box in the house from Sept.

What if the OP wants the HD channels (or any other channel) that is not available on saorview, freeview or Freesat?

Free to air TV is great (I love RTE 2 HD) but does have limitations....I for one choose to have Sky for Sky Sports HD - is that available for free anywhere?
