Road tax rates for imported 2008 car

I'm sure the information is on here somewhere but I can't locate it after some time searching around :( so apologies for asking a question that may have been answered many times already.

I'm probably going to buy an April 2008 registered UK car. Will the road tax be based on engine size or CO2 emissions? As it's a 1.9l diesel with 130 grams CO2 the difference would be significant, about €400 more expensive per annum if the engine size system is used to calculate the road tax. Different websites seem to have contradictory information on this and how the regulations apply to imported cars that were first registered abroad before July 2008.

Thanks in advance for any answers or for pointing me to the place where the answer already is :)

It will be CO2 based.. I brought it an April 2008 car when I moved here in 2009.

New cars registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 had their motortax charged on the basis of engine size initially. If it was beneficial forthose cars to switch to the CO2 based motor tax system, this happened on the first renewal of motor tax after 1 July 2008. The CO2 based system does not apply to second-hand imports that were registered abroad prior to 2008

    So, CO2 based

    So, CO2 based

...only if it's advantageous to you: otherwise you can elect for the cc-based.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful. I also had this in an email from the Motortax.ie (official) website for anybody else who has the same query.

    "Vehicle Imports

A private vehicle first registered abroad prior to 1 January 2008 will be taxed on engine cc

A private vehicle first registered abroad between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 inclusive and registered in Ireland before 1 July 2008 will be taxed on engine cc and will continue to be charged on engine cc

A private vehicle first registered abroad between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 inclusive and registered in Ireland on or after 1 July 2008 will be taxed on the CO2 rate and will continue to be charged at the CO2 rate."

I don't believe this is correct. I thought these guys got the cheaper of the two options.
