There are definitely hundreds of engineers in the same boat rite now.
I think your best bet at the moment would be to look for an internship or work experience in companies. Try and look for a 2 or 3 month placement paid if you can find one but even offer to work for free if you have too. Then work your arse off for the time your working with them and hope they ask you to stay on once the placement is over.
It worked for me anyway. When I finished my internship the company asked me to stay on, they offered me a 6 month contract fully paid, unfortunately I was going back to college to do a masters and so had to turn down.

Otherwise keep an eye out for any companies offering graduate programmes. Although there is very very strong competition for graduate programmes so it will be extremely hard to get offered a job.

Just FYI you won't find much in London in the way of consultancy work.

I was at graduate stage 2 years ago and the situation at home was bull****.

I emigrated to Africa, there are plenty of jobs in the mining and minerals industry here. There are a ****load of companies who will be looking for people, graduates and otherwise. The jobs are not easy but you get very good experience as you usually end up in a position with more responsibility than you would have in the civilised world.
There are plenty of jobs available for mechanical, civil, structural, e&I...

Just try the recruitment agencies at home...

Its not the best place in the world but you can easily use it as a stepping stone to a better place either at home or in Aus, NZ or Canada...

    How ya?

I am a graduate from 2009, still havent secured full time employment but have been lucky to get in with the council (under the fire service) on a voluntary basis which was for a 3 month period. I felt I was loosing touch with my chosen field of work and when the voluntary position came up I was delighted. I have been there for over a year now on a one day a week basis and its worked out well for me as when run of the mill jobs come up I apply for them to keep the money flowing, I have worked as a sales rep and more recently in the local fish factory along with keeping my voluntary work going. I guess its about bridging the gap between education and when you secure a full time position along with gaining valuable experience. Any professionals that I have come in contact are all impressed that I have kept up the voluntary experience and seem keen to keep me in mind if and thats a big 'IF' a position would ever come up. I believe if you show that you are willing to do anything for the mean time to gain experience it will pay off in the long run when a job does come up.

Just keep plugging away chief :)
