Photoshop Elements (9 is the current version) is really good. It's got 90% of what Photoshop CS5 has - at a fraction of the price - expect to pay €80 - €90. Works on both PC and MAC.

If you're a student you can get PS extended for only 195eur here:

If not get the elements version.

Or if you're just going to be retouching photos and stuff, Lightroom is really good for that.

Yeah you can download 30day trial versions of all of adobe softwares.
They're the full softwares so you wont be restricted in any way. They only just last for 30 days and after that you'll need to enter a serial key to use the software which you'll get if you buy the software.

I would say first just download the trial version. It'll give you good 30 days to familiarise yourself with the software.

Many of the big photoshop projects i did for my college were on the trial version.

Also if you wanna learn photoshop, i'll recommend you watch these series of tutorials. They're super helpful and super funny. If only all tutorials were like this:

If you want a free multi-layer editor then you can get The Gimp.

There are also quite a few single layer editors which are free like Picasa.

What sort of editing do want to do?

How long do you want to invest learning this software?
