turn off data on your phone and make sure that it'll still work.

some apps need a data connection to function

Tom Tom will work fine without a data connection. Just turn off 3g data in the phone settings to make sure nothing gets used that you weren't expecting. Also, if Tom Tom has a Google search for POI etc (like Navigon has, which I use), that functionality won't be able to work without a data connection, but that is bonus functionality, your phone will still work like a normal SatNav without the data connection.

In fact you don't even need a SIM card in your phone for Tomtom to work. I currently use my old iPhone 3G as a dedicated Sat Nav with no Sim card installed.

Can be very slow at acquiring GPS lock, but I have since purchased an official Tomtom cradle and now it gets a lock quicker than a dedicated Tomtom from my experience.
