How to know if there's any outstanding debt on a private sale?

I'm buying a car in a private sale, and before I hand over the cheques I would like to know if there is any way of finding out if there are any outstanding debts on the car.

I have heard there is a website I can check it on.

Does anyone know this website or any other way of checking this?

    Thank you.

As well as running a motorcheck report also ask the seller. If they are not honest about any outstanding finance then they may be hiding something else about the car too.
