Underactive Thyroid?

About a year ago, I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. A few months ago, I started to develop vertigo, and since then I have been constantly ill with various different infections. I have been on several doses of steroids and anti biotics, but they don't seem to have much of an effect. I also have had trouble with weight loss, and I seem to be constantly tired. My doctor took a blood test to check for underactive thyroid but the THS came in at 3.9 which is apparently normal level. Could it still be underactive thyroid or is it something else? I've never felt so sick in my life, and I'm only 27.

Over the last few weeks, I seem to now have a new infection, my glands are swollen and my ears are completely inflamed. My neck is very stiff. Finding it difficult to swallow. My tongue seems to have a coating on it. My doctor thought it might be thrush, but it came back negative. No lumps either. Any ideas?

Hi Adton. I am in a similar situation myself.I have not been well at all this year and i pushed for more bloods to be done as i knew myself it was something more than an infection.

My blood results first time round suggested an underactive thyroid with the result 6.4.My doctor wanted to wait and see if it would settle itself because it was not too far under? so i got the bloods re done last month. They came back showing normal range of 3.4 but the TPO test results show i have positive anti bodies? I don't know what this means as of yet but i have a doctors appointment tomorrow and will come back and share with you any info i learn.

With regards to symptoms, i have had some like your's. I started out in January with one infection after another and never felt better even after anti biotics.I have had a coating on my tongue constantly that often get's thick and hairy like and a horrible taste in my mouth.I have had constant migranes and headaches on good days.I have put on 3 stone and my neck is wider and very sore.My voice is gone deeper. My hair is very dry and falls out in clumps.I have aged years in the last year. I am a shadow of my former self, i used to be full of energy and love mixing with others. Now i would rather hide away in doors and see no one.I'm irritable, anxious, lethargic, and dazed most of the time.My memory is gone terrible and i have to constantly put reminders in my phone to remember even the simplest little thing that i took for granted before.
I snap at the silliest thing and even though i'm wrecked tired i find it very hard to fall asleep.I ache from head to toe and can barely grip things or open things. There is many, many more symptoms i won't bore you with but list all your symptoms down on a piece of paper and bring it with you for your next visit. It amazed me how many i had without realising they were all connected.

If you have not had a TPO blood test ask for one.As you can see my bloods came back normal this time but my TPO came back positive.I'm not willing to wait and see anymore.I'm going to fight until some doctor listens to me and uses the tests as they should be used and treats me accordingly.

IMO GP's in general lack an understanding on thyroid problems. The first visit i went to, my GP suggested i was depressed and was jumping on the band wagon to hand me pills straight away. I knew myself i was not depressed and pushed for blood tests.Yes most of the symptoms are the same as depression but i knew there was more to it.Push!push!push! until you get the results needed.

I hope you get the answers your looking for. There is some great posters on here who will give you more info.As i said i'm only in the process of trying to get treated at the minute.I will let you know how i get on.:)
