12 week braces to straighten crowded bottom teeth

Hi - I'm in my late 30's and during a routine dental visit my dentist said that he could fix my crowded bottom teeth in 12 weeks using braces and 'shaving' the sides off a couple of my teeth. This would cost about €3500. Sounds very interested but from reading other posts here all I've seen is that braces can be on from 1-6 years. My bottom front teeth are fairly crowded - i.e. there are 4 teeth where there is room for 3 and son 1 is pushed back and the 2 corner teeth are also a little out of place.

is it realisitc that there is such a thing as 12 week braces to straighten my teeth?

I think it all depends on the type of brace used and how much straightening needs to be done, I'm currently using invisalign braces which I will have for just 9 months to straighen both my top and bottom teeth, I actually ended up going for them because of the short time by comparison to other braces + I can eat what ever I want with them (as they can be taken out for eating). It may end up being a few weeks more in the end but I don't think it's an unrealistic time frame.

Personally I think the biology is being pushed too hard. What do the orthodontists think?

    Hi there

I am sure you appreciate it is hard to give an opinion about how long it would take to straighten your teeth without seeing you.

However from what you say there is not enough space for one tooth. I am not sure what "12 week braces are" but they are probably just normal braces put on the teeth for 12 weeks. I am not sure if the person advising you is an orthodontist but I would be surprised if they were. Traintracks are the quickest and best way to straighten teeth no matter what others say but it still takes time to get good results unless the problems are minor.

I really dont see how it could work for you unless there is only a very small problem, and by this I mean something very small and not noticeable to the general public. The teeth just cannot move that quickly safely and with stability if there is a lot of crowding. I would ask the dentist more about it and maybe get a 2nd opinion from an orthodontist, look up www.orthodontics.ie

Also the price steep. You will probably have 4 visits over 12 weeks, this is almost €900 per visit. Orthodontic treatment for a complicated case over 2 years with 20 or so vists costs about €3500-4000 so you can figure that out for yourself

Thank you - I've an appointment with an orthodontist in a couple of weeks and will go down that route. feels like the 12 week braces may have been too good to be true.
