I just did Lima to North Peru so I can't recommend anywhere in Equador. The places I went to from Lima were

Lima to Huaraz - wasn't a huge fan of here - if you are into Trekking it probably would be a cool place to go

Huaraz to Trujillo - I liked Trujillo - they were some interesting ruins (Chan Chan and the mooche temples) around the city. Not much to do in the city and the ruins don't compare to Maachu Pichu but still cool to see.

Trujillo to Chicalayo - a must see for me was the Royal Tombs of Sipan. We did a day trip from Chicalayo where first they brought you to see where the tombs were discovered and you could see the current excavations and then after they took you to the museum where all the objects they found in the tombs were displayed. Some of the objects were just amazing. It was definitely a highlight for me in Peru.

You can get a bus from Chicalayo onwards to Equador.

Just have recommendations for Peru, as went direct to Quito.

I really loved Huanchaco, a small beach town beside Trujillo. Great surfing, nice beaches and one of the most relaxed, chilled out places I've been. Stay at Lily's!

If you're looking for something busier, Mancora in the very north of Peru has good beaches, plenty of parties, and a huge population of backpackers. Great spot for kite surfing. Buses leave from here to everywhere in Ecuador.

If you like trekking at all definitely head for Huaraz- fantastic scenery, with lots of different routes of varying difficulty.

did this as part of my route this summer, i would recommend mancora in the north of peru for nice beaches/nightlife etc.

as for ecuador, id recommend puerto lopez on the coast for the whale watching, banos while is a very cool place with great scenery and nice thermal baths, a couple hours out of quito cotoxpi national park which is amazing... also otavalo 3/4 hours north or quito which has a terrific markets (dont bother if thats not ur thing)

+1 on Pueto Lopez, nice place to see the whales but make sure you go right time of year. Also the Machallia National Park is nice to visit and just bum about on the beaches.
Near Quito is Mitad del Mundo which is a sort of park/museum on the Equator (its more interesting than it sounds!) Also good night life in Quito, better than Lima anyway.
