    Hi guys,

Just wondering if you have ever heard of the mirror inside the Canon 5D coming off. I was doing a job last night and my camera decided to stop working when I checked by taking off the lens the mirror was loose. I tried to gently push it back into place but it kept coming off  and I had to do an emergency camera borrow!! I;ve googled it and it's a fairly common problem with Canon, but has it ever happened to any of ye? And when it's fixed is it likely yo go again?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Yep, happened to me this time last year at Peoples Photography.
It's a known fault and will be repaired by Canon free of charge. (they also gave mine a free service, sensor clean and shutter count).
The repair is very good in that they use a more modern and long lasting adhesive to hold the mirror in place.

Ohhh free service, sensor clean and shutter count, not bad! I'll have to send it off so but where do I send it is there a place in Ireland or does it go abroad? Is there a temporary job I can do in the mean time, I was hoping to have it for the next two nights or I'lll have to go on the borrow again :o

I sent mine direct to Canon UK and bypassed the crowd over here.
Wouldn't know about a temp job but look up zerohamster on here - he's quite good at repairs.

P&B has it spot on, Canon will do this for free as it is a manufacturing defect where the glue holding the mirror deteriorates much quicker than it should resulting in the mirror falling off.

Give Canon UK a call and they will point you towards where to send it.

Canon will glue a new mirror in with Cemendine Super X (a silicon based glue) and will put two small reinforcement pieces of metal that basically just give the mirror extra surface area to adhese to and make sure that it won't fall off again. The reinforcement isn't always done by repair places as it is somewhat an overprecaution considering the fault lay with the glue deteriorating not the amount of area the glue adhesed to.

There is no temporary solution unfortunately and you are probably quite lucky the mirror didn't shatter if you used it after it fell off.
I did a repair of the same fault and the mirror had fallen off and caught as the mirror arms were cycling which broke the edges and was quite lucky to not destroy the shutter, get shards inside or scratch the low pass filter so don't try to temporarily stick the mirror in as you could cause a lot of damage that wouldn't be covered by canon.

    I hope that helps.

I know Canon are keen to enter the mirrorless market, but this just isn't the correct way to go about it.
